Does the New York Times bestseller list hurt the publicity of good new books? Many bookstores discount NYT bestsellers, which increases the sales of those books, which means they will spend more time on the NYT besteller list, which means that their price will be discounted... I just wish there was more of a way to rotate different books through those lists, so that we don't keep seeing Tuesdays with Morrie and The World is Flat and Obama's latest book week after week after week. I began reading it yesterday...the preface really was wonderful....it got me sucked in right away, talking about how every election cycle we are offered 'change' with no real substance to it. suggestions for a new book? i recently just finished up the book "the kiterunner" and im looking to start a new one. i loved this book in that it involved a fictional story but that it tied into various non-fictional events like the taliban in afghanistan and how the story involved a character, although flawed in various ways, had great depth to him and was generally interesting to read from his perspective. another aspect of this book i enjoyed were the various plot twists involving characters from the protagonists past that have come back to remind him of past mistakes. can anyone suggest a new book i should start that could be loosely said as having any of these elements? i thought about picking a new book off of the new york times best sellers list but they look...well...horrible. the list seems pact with countless cheesy suspense novels and teen dramas, none of which i am looking for.

Has anyone read "The Book of Useless Information"? It is a "fact book" by Noel Botham. It was published in 2006. They even have a "Useless information Society". I normally wouldn't name names like this, but this drivel was actually on the New York Times Bestseller List. Half the book has "facts" that come off the internet (and each site steals from each other), verbatim! There are many "facts" in here that are not facts at all. Here's one example: (quote):"H2O expands as it freezes and contracts as it melts displacing the exact same amount of fluid in either state. So, if the nothern ice cap did melt, it would cause absolutely no rise in the level of the ocean." Oh really? What about all the ice that is ABOVE SEA LEVEL? This book is so ridiculious, I don't know why it would be on the BestSeller's List!

For a beggining writer, how do I get the attention of a publishing company? Obviously, I've written a book, and would like to publish it. However, I don't know where to start. I don't expect my work to rocket straight to the top of New York Time's Best Seller list; that's wishful thinking. (But I can still hope!) My book is called BOB(The Book of Bumology). It is a fictional piece that explains the history, reasoning, and principals of anyone or anything bum-related. It is a rather funny book. What is the process to submit a work of literature? I have a gut feeling that there's more to it than wrapping the pages in brown paper and shipping it off. From my own attempted research, I've heard of literary agents. Are they similar to Hollywood agents?

Did you know a former Bush backer is writing a Pro-Obama book? The conservative Evangelical biographer of George W. Bush and Tom DeLay has moved on to a new subject: Barack Obama. And his new book, due out this summer, may lend credibility to Senator Obama's bid to win Evangelical Christian voters away from the Republican Party. The forthcoming volume from Stephen Mansfield, whose sympathetic "The Faith of George W. Bush" spent 15 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in 2004, is titled "The Faith of Barack Obama." Its tone ranges from gently critical to gushing, and the author defends Obama-and even his controversial former minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright-from conservative critics, and portrays him as a compelling figure for Christian voters. Young Evangelicals are saying, 'Look, I'm pro-life but I'm looking at a guy who's first of all black-and they love that; two, who's a Christian; and three who believes faith should bear on public policy," Mansfield, who described himself as a conservative Republican, said in a telephone interview. "They disagree with him on abortion, but they agree with him on poverty, on the war."
The Anti-Government Message Is Being Spread Through Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movies and books? In recent days the LRC blog has been buzzing about the anti-government feel that permeates the hugely popular Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. Reflecting on this I realized that this is just one part of a larger trend within the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre since the Bush administration has taken office. I do not intend to connect people’s view of Bush with anti-government Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies and books, but rather will just use his ascension into office as a time period in which to examine. The following is a partial list of popular movies and books within the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre that take an anti-government stance, even if that was not the intention of the writers, and have been released since the Bush administration took office.* The Lord of the Rings: These three movies were based on books written in the 1950s, but since the movies came out recently I include them here. In this story J.R.R. Tolkien demonstrates that power can corrupt even the best of people. People who start out with good intentions can be seduced by this power until their primary goal becomes maintaining that power, and not the good intentions which motivated them to seek the power in the first place. Star Wars Episodes I, II and III: These movies show the descent from Republic to Empire as the people gladly give up control to an evil government whose sole purpose is to consolidate its own power. These movies are a good demonstration of how government creates a crisis and then destroys liberty and grabs power in order to solve that crisis. Serenity: This futuristic movie is based on the cult television series Firefly. Based loosely on the South following the War for Southern Independence, Firefly takes place following a war where the central planets of the universe forced all of the "independent" planets under their control in order to form the Alliance. This is one of the most anti-government movies/television shows I have ever seen. The main characters simply want the Alliance to leave them alone, but the Alliance wants complete control over everything. In Serenity the government has gone so far to control the population that they kill millions of people in an experiment to control peoples’ minds in order to build a "perfect world." X-Men: Based on a widely popular comic book of the same name, these movies show a minority group of people known as mutants, who represent the next stage in evolution. As human nature compels people to fear what they don’t understand, the government passes the Mutant Registration Act, a Nazi style law which forces all mutants to register with the federal government. With the government unwilling to protect their rights many of the mutants form a group to fight back against the "humans." As violence begets violence this escalates until the government develops a drug to destroy the mutant gene and begins forcefully injecting mutants. This tyrannical action can be equated very easily with forced sterilization. In the comic books, but not appearing in the movies, mutants and non-mutants are eventually sorted, tagged and placed in concentration camps in order to solve the "mutant problem." V for Vendetta: This movie takes place in a totalitarian futuristic London. Following a terrorist attack, which was staged by members of the government, a fascist-style party takes control and begins eroding liberties in order to have security. First the government attacks the Muslims, then the homosexuals, and then everyone else as England is turned into a fascist police state. Batman Begins: Far from the campy 1960’s Batman where the Dark Knight works to help Police Commissioner Gordon and D.A. Harvey Dent, in this version the city government is completely corrupt as cops, judges, doctors and councilmen are all on the payroll of criminal organizations. Transformers: Though this movie is not outwardly anti-government it involves a secret government agency which conducts scientific studies that backfire and almost destroy the planet. Unfortunately the Secretary of Defense is portrayed as a good guy totally in the dark about all of this and in the end the President disbands the agency. The Traveler: The International Best-selling book by John Twelve Hawks has been called "A cyber 1984" by The New York Times. In this book a group of power-hungry elites use the government to set up a worldwide electronic control grid, turning the world into a virtual prison. According to the author all of the technology used in this book currently exists or is being developed right now. The Left Behind Series: Though it may be lost on the readers and even the writers, this series about the biblical end times demonstrates how evil men can gain control of government and use people’s good intentions to create a literal hell on Earth. Following a global crisis where all the world’s Christians disappear, the people of the world turn to the Global Community, an organization that grows out of the U.N. The newly elected leader of this government is the Anti-Christ, who uses fear to get everyone in the world to obey him and persecute dissenters. Though these books are poorly written, if read from a libertarian point of view they make a very good case for small government. However, I do not think that was the writers’ intention at all. *Some of the serial movies and books listed began before Bush took office, but had further parts come out since 2001. English 2 Honors, Summer Reading Quest.? Okay, well i need help on finding some books to read over the summer for my English 2 Honors Class. I have to read a Current Contemporary American Fiction book. The author must be from America, the plot, themes, characters, and the setting must strictly relate to America. It must be a book from the New York Times book Review's "Bestsellers" lists from June 1, 2006 to the present. Harry potter, The Da Vinci Code, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are not acceptable.
