Why was THE BOOK Schindler's List Banned? I'm doing a project for english where we have to read a banned book. I need 2 websites and 2 databased websites. But I can only seem to find websites talking about the MOVIE schindler's list. Do you know of any websites, or information yourself about the banning of schindler's list?
Anybody interested in seeing the "banned" book list? I thought I'd post this as a public service as it appears from reading previous posts that not everyone has this list. DOWN with censorship!! 1. It's been going around all over the boards today. Check for yourself. I was emailed this list from a pretty respectable source. Jewish Girl: I know, me too. I don't know WHAT the problem is... Apparently this happened this week sometime. Kjelstad: Thanks for the link--I didn't know about that. By the way...if anyone wants to know what the world would be like with our books banned, please read Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury. I'm surprised THAT book didn't make the list...
Can anyone provide me with a list of banned books? I find that usually the books teens and other age groups are discouraged from reading are the best. My school doesn't have any banned books, but my friend goes to a catholic private school and the list is list ten pages long. It doesn't even have to be a school list. Any banned books please thanks. Just novels.
why isn't the Bible on the banned books list at my school? Why are some books banned just for "questionable language"... But the Bible isn't banned and it contains: child abuse, slavery, racism, murder, rape, prostitution etc. ? @ anna & Iranian I never said I was against people reading the Bible. I'm a very tolerant person...I was simply making a point about the people who choose the "banned books" and thought it was interesting that the Bible wouldn't be considered too obscene for school. @dime LOL you clearly have never read the Bible. @ Brad I don't think any books should be banned. I'm completely against it.
Why is there a "Banned Books" list? What about Freedom of Speech? How is Sarah Palin involved? I just saw this article on Yahoo about a list of irrestistable banned books. Here's the link. http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/91854/ Why are good books like "The Lovely Bones", "To Kill a Mockingbird", and "Of Mice and Men" on the banned list? All of those are good books. I don't get it. I thought that this was a country where we could express ourselves and this country has the nerve to break that right by banning books from the world and denying authors who wanna express themselves? The fact that there are books that cannot be expressed to the good people of America pisses me off, especially since I love books! You know, Ray Bradbury (author of Fahrenheit 451) was right about something about this happening except the banned books aren't being burned yet. Here's the link about Sarah Palin and her opinion of banned books. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/ap_on_el_pr/palin_librarian_4 How is she involved in this? Is she for or against banning books? If she's against banned books, then she might be likable. I need to know what the hell is going on with this issue! Why are there banned books? What happened to free speech? VIVA LA RAZA! This is censorship! I own a few books from this list.
What do you think of Palin's list of banned books,...? Haven't you read any of these and enjoyed them? Sarah Palin's book ban list and Chris Hedges on "American Fascists" When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross. Sinclair Lewis, 1935 Below is a list of the books Sarah Palin tried to have banned from the Wasilla, Alaska Library. When I was in Anchorage two years ago, residents of Wasilla I met described the place as a growing, more-and-more suburban community north of Anchorage. In her speech, Palin called the area "the valley." Mayor Palin would seem to be a strong force in the suburbanization of the village of Wasilla. When the Wasilla librarian refused to trash these books, Mayor Palin tried to have her fired. This caused a stir in Wasilla which then turned into a drive to protect the librarian. Some of my favorite examples of American literature are on this list. This is the act of a patriotic American? No, this is the act of a religious fundamentalist trying to squeeze herself into the role of a mythic frontier American. The attempt to ban American literary masterpieces like Catcher In The Rye, Grapes Of Wrath, To Kill A Mockingbird, Death Of A Salesman, Leaves Of Grass, As I Lay Dying, Huckleberry Finn, Catch 22 and Tarzan indicates, flags and Bible citations aside, her ascendance to national power would be downright un-American. In the realm of Rovian political marketing and the unfolding effort to win the Presidency not with ideas but with a cult of personality, McCain is the humiliated warrior ready to "go to the gates of hell" to preserve American exceptionalism and Sarah Palin is his fascist "bride," a mythic frontier mom able to shoot, gut and cook a moose while nurturing her family who has said publicly our war in Iraq is supported by God and people should pray to God to get the Alaska gas pipeline approved. This is a pivotal moment in American history, and we all need to expose this cult of personality for what it is, a cynical sham. Please pass this on far and wide. John Grant This list is taken from the official minutes of the Wasilla Library Board. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner Blubber by Judy Blume Brave New World by Aldous Huxley Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer Carrie by Stephen King Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Christine by Stephen King Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau Cujo by Stephen King Curses, Hexes, and Spells by Daniel Cohen Daddy's Roommate by Michael Willhoite Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Peck Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Decameron by Boccaccio East of Eden by John Steinbeck Fallen Angels by Walter Myers Fanny Hill (Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure) by John Cleland Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes Forever by Judy Blume Grendel by John Champlin Gardner Halloween ABC by Eve Merriam Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Have you ever looked at the banned and challenged book list in your area? Where I live the list is pretty long. Some of the more ridiculous titles included in the list are: The Giver by Lois Lowry Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Lord of the Flies by William Golding These books have all been challenged and in some cases removed from schools and libraries. I've read all of them, and I wouldn't hesitate to give any one of them to my kids, once they are at the appropriate age. We home school. I agree that there are some books I hope my kids never read, but I don't believe that this kind of censorship is effective at all. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't like it, don't read it! What are your thoughts? Am I missing something here?
omfg banned books list is horrible!!!? What the crap is up with this? Have you seen the recent list? Why do they put these books on the list? To Kill A Mocking Bird I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings The Outsiders James and the Giant Peach Harry Potter series.... wtf?? i HAD to read some of those in high school. why are they banned? couldn't possibly be content??? i don't understand =[
looking for a "banned" book? I'm looking to find out about a book. I don't know the title and know very little about it. I know someone who knows the title but he won't tell anyone. He gave a few clues: 1) It was burned in Nazi Germany. 2) It has been banned many other countries. 3) It has something to do with alchemy and/or the manipulation of space and time. He also said that it was on "like, the ten most banned books list" and he jokingly said that if he told us the title he might be arrested. Can anyone help?
Where's a website I could find a list of banned books from school? I know Captain Underpants, Harry Potter and Catcher in The Rye were banned in some schools because of crude humor, nightmares, violence, drugs, achol hol and swearing. Captain Underpants= Crude humor, inapropirate humor and violence. Harry Potter = I don't know Catcher in the Rye=Violence, blood, drugs, drinking and swearing. Thank you for answering?
Where can i find the list of books banned by my school? I have searched my school's web site, of course. Majority of books that my classes read are on the 100 most banned books list so i was curious if there was a site that you could look up a specific school to see if they even ban books.
Dose Israel have a list of banned books, music, and works of art similar to ban america has? This has to do with how people prevent the use of the Swastika and other symbols which where abused and contorted by the Nazis to ensure a reason military conquest . I want to know about the list if it does exist and gather that information to allow for the holocaust to finally be viewed as an event that shaped the world in some postive aspect. holocaust will never happen again since information like that can never be abused and contorted like that again.
What are banned books banned from? If everyone has the ability to read them and are encouraged to, then how is a book banned at all? What is the purpose of the banned book list? bina- that doesn't answer my question at all. What are banned books banned from? and you gave me an explanation of why not what It's frustrating that no one reads the question. WHAT are they banned from. I don't know how to be more clear. Libraries carry them, they can be bought online, and they can be taught in school, so WHAT are they banned from?

Do you think a book should be banned from the library just becasue it uses bad language? It's for homework. I'm supposed to interview different people and wirte down thier responses. It's mainly about Catcher In The Rye. If you've read it you know it has bad language, sexual themes, and has a mentally unstable person as the hero of the story. So do you think that's a good reason to ban a book from a library/reading list for school? Thank you for any answers. I really appreciate them all.
can some one give me a list of banned books? i would also like the year and the Arthur now this is a different question. can you give me the name of a Arthur that was killed because of the book he wrote? thats all thank you
What things should I look out for to make sure my book doesn't end up being banned I've read a lot of ban books, Slaughterhouse Five, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, The Color Purple . . . And I understand that a lot of those books i've read there are constant swears, and really descriptive sexual scenes. But then there are books such as Monster, and The Secret Life of Bees that I've read that I think have almost the same things, but aren't banned (at least I don't think so). Monster has a ton of fowl language, and The Secret Life of Bees has a swear here and there and some reletive sexual content. And a books that I just don't understand why they are banned like Memoirs of a Geisha, Kujo, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. But surely, I wouldn't want my book to be on this list, so what can I watch out for? My book is an adventure/action/fantasy type of novel, so there's going to be some blood written description during certain scenes (battle scenes), and since my characters are teens, I guess I'll be wanting to, not necessarily having to, but wanting to add a couple slurs here and there in order to fit the "now-a-days teens" things . . . I mean, I'm 16 taking quarter college classes at Century so I'm a teen myself. I curse here and there. So . . . any advise? What's too much, what's okay??
Why is "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" on so many "banned book" lists? School boards are so afraid of someone being offended. Yes, I know that the word "n*gger" is used repeatedly by Huck in reference to the slave Jim. Well, duh! Considering the time and place the book was set in, is he really going to refer to him as "African-American"? And all the talk about Samuel Clemens (pen name - Mark Twain) being a racist; in fact, Clemens was a staunch abolitionist (that is, wanting to do away with slavery, for those of you who don't pay attention during your history class). The book was written in first person from Huck's point of view using Huck's persona, NOT that of Mr. Clemens. The school library will keep copies of Seventeen (with articles on "should I sleep with my boyfriend?" and "the positives of masturbation"), but they refuse to keep this American classic on the shelves. What's wrong with this picture?
some really good banned books? hi. i have a book project and it has to be from banned book list. i want banned books that are easy to read or in 9th grade level.
how many books have you read off of this list? and how much have they completely warped your mind? http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=bbwlinks&Template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=85714">ALA's 100 most frequently challenged books list includes to kill a mocking bird, the harry potter series, numerous judy blume books, the adventures of tom sawyer, and more. other lists of banned books on the ALA's site include 1984, brave new world, the giver, the bluest eye, grapes of wrath, and many more "classic" novels. opinions on literary censorship are welcome as well. btw, this is ALA's list of top 100 challenged books. that means that parents, teachers, whomever, had some sort of issue w/ something of the content of any of these books. some are challenged for dealing with homosexuality, some are challenged for sexual content, some are challenged for racial content, and some are challenged for language.
List of banned books? Is their a website on the web about a list of banned books that parent think are innaproprite, it would help a lot if it was by parents, not the government. My question is, anyone know a website like that. I wnated to know because at my school librarry they are now making a few books only being cheaked out to certien age groups. Many books though that are banned I already read, liked, and did not find bad.
Any books currently banned in the US? i know some books like Ulysses, E for Ecstasy, Catcher in the Rye, have been banned in certain places but not all over the US. so i wanted to know if there is a list of currently banned books, or is there not such list? Banned as in anyone in the US would get in legal trouble for owning them, not just banned in specific places(schools, libraries) due to certain content.
What books have been banned in the United States? Hello! I would like to get started on reading books that have been banned in the US. Could anyone give me a good list (or website that gives a list) of books that have been banned in this country? I know there will be no fully comprehensive list, but I'm looking for a nice, long one if possible! Time period, genre, intended audience age, etc. do not matter. Any and all banned books are fair game. Thanks!
Do you feel that any book should be banned in the U.S.? Is there any book that should be banned in the U.S. for whatever reason? Here is a list of books banned in the US and their reasons : http://title.forbiddenlibrary.com/ my question is. How is any book bannable in a free society? Can't we question anything? Can't we look at anything we want if we are adults. If pornography is acceptable by some people then how can it be made illegal because some others oppose it? Freedom of expression must also be freedom to offend. No?
Why would a 'Where's Waldo' book be banned from a school? I am taking a class about children's literature, and we are learning about books that have been challenged or banned in schools. One of the books on the list is the infamous 'Where's Waldo?' Why on earth could this possibly be banned?
Gossip girl. Banned book list? Why should gossip girl be on the banned book list. Can someone give me an analytical paragraph explaining why? with quotes from the book. Thank you.
banned books in other countries? For those who live in or know about what goes on in other countries, can you tell me a list of banned/challenged books in those countries? Give the country name and the list of books. Thanks!
Banned books? 0.) Do you even know what the Banned Book List is? 1.) Are any of your favorite books on the Banned Book List? 2.) Do you agree/disagree on the List? Why? 3.) Why do you think people complain about Books and have them placed on the list? I'm just curious. I read banned books. Hurray for meaningful literature!
Do you think The Catcher in the Rye should be banned from high school english classes? It's for homework. I'm supposed to interview different people and wirte down thier responses. why are books banned? what are 5 reasons books should not be banned? Some books which have often appeared on banned book lists are: The Catcher in the Rye, The American Heritage Dictionary, Huckleberry Finn, Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies, Civil Disobedience, Of Mice and Men, but why were they banneed.and why should they not be?
Animal Farm? Not Banned? I don't have any problems with Animal Farm by George Orwell, but I noticed on the banned book list that it wasn't there. Any one have a reason why?
Did you get to see the Spanish and Italian Inquisition series on PBS? It was at least a three hour program and was awesome. I didn't realize the Church just released their records a few years ago, and that they rescinded their banned books list only in 1960.... What did you think, if you watched it? That Napoleon liberated Northern Italy from the Inquisition was news to me. I had often heard that he was considered a liberator all across Europe in his day. Beethoven even dedicated a symphony to him. But I had never really understood what Napoleon had done to get this reception. We’re taught mainly about his military genius, his arrogance and womanizing, his Winter debacle in Russia, his ultimate hubris in declaring himself emperor and his downfall and subsequent exiles. But I had never heard the story of his liberation of the Jewish ghettos of Italy, nor of his confiscation and study of 1300 crates of Inquisition records. It is from Napoleon’s scholars that we learned of the persecution of Galileo. Without Napoleon, I believe we would still be in the dark over the extent of the Inquisition. ====== "I have not yet seen anything about the Protestant Inquisition, that made also some very bad things" Huh??? In the USA: from early age we’re indoctrinated in the religious
