Top Video Hosting Sites Knowledge Base
YouTube, Revver, Google Video, or Metacafe? Those are the top video-hosting sites. What's your favorite for searching for a video, and uploading? Mine would be YouTube for searching, and Revver for uploading cause they pay you.

Good web hosting with ffmpeg/flvtool2/mencoder support? Hi all, I'm currently hosted at SiteGround, and am currently interested in switching. Here is information on SiteGround's hosting plan (there is only one plan): http://www.siteground.com/hosting_features.htm I would like something about equal or better, but I'd really like ffmpeg, flvtool2, AND mencode to be supported because I plan on adding a section for videos on my site. I need to have PHP support, but it would be awesome if I could have all this, plus ASP support at well. I'm looking mainly for shared hosting since it's cheaper, but if that's not possible, I'd appreciate links to dedicated hosting as well. Thanks to everyone. I decided to ask here since all those "top web hosting" sites are scams, and I wanted a reply from real webmasters.
Web hosting with big capacity? Hello, We are a couple of people from Denmark who are working on a new video site witch of cause will be different from all other. :-) We are interested in identifying the right web hosting service that will meet our needs. Our needs are: -Our site will be hosting approximately 50GB of video material, where each video will be about 30MB. -When launching our PR campaign (Techcrunch, Mashable, and sites alike) we hope for something like 100.000 visitors watching the same video over a period of 24 hours. We wish :-) -So something like 1.000 visitors should be able view the same video at the same time without delay. -We do not have any need for top security. -We do expect a service with a high % uptime. -We are on a tight budget, so it can’t be real expensive. Witch web hosting services should we consider? Cheers, Christian.
Question about online show? We've all heard of youtube. But one video hosting site(metacafe) actually pays users with alot of traffic & high ratings through a program called "producer rewards". The top "producers" have videos about things like "how to make flash powder" and "how to tie an impossible knot". Theres even one guy who has all his videos about massaging people and hes made more than 32 grand (just think if chris crocker had got his start on metacafe instead of youtube!). Anyway, my question is... for an online show to be succesful and attract a lot of viewers what does it need to have (apart from massage clips appearently!.. weird)? So far I've got three ideas, which I would love for all the yahoo users to contribute to! 1. Just a vlog, talk about everything, be funny, maybe some antics here and there. 2. A show about something specific such as special effects, dating, sports, cars, entertainment, maybe a talk show. 3. Maybe a spin off on Jackass, crazy antics and the like. help??

Social-Networking Sites? The use of social networking, photo hosting, and online video websites represent a significant shift in online user behavior. What is your experience with these sites? What is you favorite? Do you account with any of them? What are the pros and cons? Which one do you recommend, and why? MySpace is the leader in social networking, receiving 82% of those visits among the top 20 social networking websites in September 2006. Then, come FaceBook (www.facebook.com), Bolt (www.bolt.com), Bebo (www.bebo.com), Orkut (www.orkut.com), Gaia Online (www.gaia.com) In photo sharing, there are : PhotoBucket (www.photobucket.com), Flickr (www.flickr.com), YouTube (www.youtube.com). There are others, here's a listing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites
What web hosting service is the best choice to host my new website? I seen a list of the top 10 web hosting services at HOSTAZ.com. naming lunarpages, IXhosting, hostmonster as the top 3. Now im not too familiar with what everything does- that comes with the hosting, but one thing that is different is that lunarpages and hostmonster's POP is unlimited and IXhosting is 2500. Now im wondering what that would mean to me and the website I intend on building? . My page is an entertainment/info themed site. So there will be streaming video, a lot of photos, newsletter, things like that. WIll that hold me back some way or should it not be an issue? Im thinking it's something having to do with how many email accounts my site can hold. Would love some help. thanks!

Yahoo webhosting? What's a good web host? Every Top 10 Hosting Plans list I see is different. So those don't offer much help. Bluehost I've never heard of but keeps emerging as one of the best. I'm currently using godaddy which I REALLY DISLIKE. It's tortuous. Everytime you buy a domain, you're blasted with screens of more options to buy crap. I dislike godaddy hosting. I have about 8 domains and a hosting package currently on godaddy so if I switched I'd need to be able to transfer those. I REALLY like yahoo's search engine and answers! area, etc. But I am not sure about there webhosting. Would need -- ecommerce (i'm going to be selling audio products, documents, and possibly video products from the site. So auto-downloading of a purchased product is a must (I know ejunkie offers that but that's too small scale). --Site analytics!!! I MUST have site analytics! -- domain transfer ease --quality cPanel installs -- low cost etc. Thanks. Bluehost was the top of this one list, so I may check them out. #2 Today, 03:34 AM samuelsirveur View Beta Profile New Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Posts: 2 Bluehost looks like fail Quoted from user reviews > > > > Bye Bye Bluehost. keyboard lights light up randomly? Everything will work fine then all of the sudden the 'Num Lock' 'Caps Lock' and 'Scroll Lock' lights at the top right hand corner of my keyboard will light up and go out. After that the small keypad on the right will work without the light in 'Num Lock' being on. Then maybe 6 mins later it will happen again and so on. There is one thing that I have noticed. It seems to start doing this when I am on a video hosting website and stop after I have left the site. I'm not sure why this would make a difference. I just want to know whats going on. This has never happened before. I have an older HP.
Hi i need help with web hosting and domain names. Im new to this and want to set up a movie review site, help!? Im not sure yet how big the site is going to be and if i should run it as a business or a personal site, im not sure what band with and space im going to need either! I eventually want to have a site with honest reviews and for it to be open for selected members to add reviews also. I want links to movie websites, video trailers, links to buy movies and merchandise from amazon etc, maybe emails sent to members with info on new films and probably a lot more. Im guessing that with the amount of info that is gonna be on the site and all the constant updating it will need to be a half decent package? And im based in the UK so should i opt for a UK based company? Obviously i am going to want top notch reliability with limited downtime and the best possible support. Any help would be amazing, obviously i am pretty naive. Thanks again
how to blog like www.rosie.com? Love the style of the blog www.rosie.com. Daily posts of talk blog, edited video and still photos with links to Flicker and ads on the main page. Do you need a Mac? How do you upload all the stuff daily? Who hosts the blog? I have asked at the site but she gets many questions per day and I have not received an answer. Is it just a function of having a Mac and Mac functions? It just seems so easy to do but I cannot figure it out. Please just look at a current page and break down the components. There is a journal area, an area that tells when last update was, questions on or off now, links to other blogs, ads, a daily photo at the top, videos that have been edited with fades and music (How is that done, what software?), do those videos have to be compressed?, what is the expense for a blog? Are there templates for blogs. I just like this one because it is updated daily and had talk video and edited video pieces, music and a journal. Can you help? Thanks

Why is Glenn Beck misleading and allowing his loyal followers to be fleeced? out of their hard earned money? While using 'panic' strategies (sound familiar?) to encourage his listeners to invest in gold with Goldline International, he leads them to believe that they will be buying bullion when what they actually receive is highly overpriced Swiss and French gold coins. <Cashing in on all this is a raft of entrepreneurs who have tapped into financial insecurity and fever dreams of impending tyranny. Nearly every major conservative radio host, including Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger has advertised gold. (See "Full Metal Racket," page 30.) But none has done more to cheer on the new gold rush than Glenn Beck. Beck, whose various media enterprises brought in $32 million last year, according to Forbes, has a particular interest in plugging gold. Since 2008, Goldline has been one of his most reliable sponsors. Last year, after Beck called President Obama a racist, and advertisers bailed on his cable show (see "Lonesome at the Top"), Goldline stuck by him. And its loyalty appears to have paid off. In an email, Goldline's executive vice president Scott Carter says that while its Beck sponsorship doesn't bring in the majority of its customers, it "has improved sales," which exceed $500 million a year. In turn, Beck has stood by Goldline. Last year, he made a promo video in which he stated, "This is a top-notch organization"—a quote featured prominently on Goldline's website. After the liberal watchdog Media Matters complained about Beck and Goldline's partnership, Beck posted a video on his site in which he unapologetically noted that he'd started buying from Goldline long before it was his sponsor, back when gold was $300 an ounce.> Read the full article here: http://motherjones.com/politics/2010/05/glenn-beck-goldline-weiner Sorry Casey.. obviously you didn't read the article.
How do I sell website space for advertisment? How much can I make? Alright I'm building a video game its going to be an online rpg. I don't want to charge players to play it but I do want to make some proffit off of it. So I was thinking that I could make the players logon online to play wich would give my website a lot of repeat daily hits. So I was hoping I could sell out a horizontal space on the top of the page then the vertical space on the right hand side of the page, how much would these be worth? Do I sell to just one compony or can I make it alternate between different adds for the same profit. I was also thinking that I could put a link on my page to 'create a free team website' link on the page for the players of the game, make the site and host it myself, could I sell space on thoese websites to, and if so would I have to charge a lot less because of so few hits on that site? Is my idea worth the effort? Any other ideas? Any details I should concider? Thank you in advance.
I need admins, bloggers and experts! Think you can do it? Hi there, I have a friend who owns this channel www.youtube.com/cutframe The channel is becoming increasingly popular, showing tv shows such as peep show, britains got talent etc. After popular uploads the channel is 5/10 times within the top ten, many times even the 1st TOP channel viewed on youtube. However now after getting a little test run, within the month he has got more than 300+ subscribers, and thousands of views. almost 200 videos within just a MONTH! Anyway, He now needs wordpress bloggers, so that he can embed the videos inside the blog. He is going to buy a domain and hosting. However he needs the following 1 - WordPress personal page designer and web developer - able to make blogs similar to his friends site at www.bbspy.co.uk (can you make something this personalised?) 2 - A second admin - who has to have a professional approach and will make key decisions for the sites development. Also needs to know more than average on websites. 3 - someone who is good at graphics! 4 - For moving image advertising we need someone who can create cutframe adverts with creativity and 3d motion (advert based) 5 - Recorders are welcome! People who are able to record high quality videos of shows on tv may also apply - and we can see whether there are any strong reasons to why not! NOW THE IMPORTANT BIT. YOU MIGHT ASK.. WHATS IN IT FOR ME? WELL ONCE WE GET THE SITE RUNNING - WE CAN START AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM, AS WELL AS OTHER WEB METHODS TO GAIN A LITTLE CASH ON THE SITE. EVEN IF YOU ARE THE RARE WEB DEVELOPER YOU WILL RECIEVE SHARES OF ANY REVENUE THAT IS GENERATED. I just want to get the project out of the way... and wondering if anyone is interested in this summer proj. To find out more ADD cutframe@live.com or email at cutframe@live.com Or if you want to check out the site, log on to www.youtube.com/cutframe Thanks!
did u know about myspace? im not lien its true read it all and change your password There has not been a power outage at MySpace Data Centers (they are avoiding telling us the truth)... but there may indeed be some database problems because MySpace is being Hacked hardcore. I've been seeing a lot of bulletins supposedly posted by my friends that I KNOW my friends would not send.. and those of you who have had it happen to your account know what I mean. IF YOU SEE a bulletin from a friend that says "Check out this link" or "Look at this video" anything like that... BE CAREFUL. Your friend might not have sent it. If you click on the link in the bulletin and a page comes up that looks like the MySpace login screen. Don't assume that "Oh crap.. I guess I have to log in again". Look up at the address in the address field at the top of your browser (you know.. where you type them in). If it does not say MySpace.com or bulletin.myspace.com then DO NOT put in your email login and password. What is happening is this... a hacker has mirrored the MySpace login page by duplicating it in every detail... which means he has Web design skills. Then he/she hosts it on a fake server somewhere... maybe at home... or stealing space from one somewhere else. When you enter in your login and password again.. it is being saved straight to the hacker's database or server. All they have to do is get a few real users (your friends) info... and then it starts a chain reaction. Many of you use your same email and password info on other sites.. maybe even for online banking.... if you think you have accidentally logged into one of the fake MySpace pages... go change your password everyhwere you use it... ! If you don't believe me.. ask some of your friends that you thought were sending out stupid bulletins with links to porno sites or links to things that weren't even there... and I'll bet they will set you straight. Also.. here is an article I found today after I got pissed that the site was down again. I Googled "MySpace" and "Hacked" and found this from 12 days ago. http://www.tmz.com/2006/07/16/myspace-hacked/ Please repost as "EVERYONE READ AND REPOST!! WE ARE STARTING A REVOLUTION!!" Repost this because what your friends don't know may affect you. -AF
Do you think the Fairness doctrine should be applied to internet websites? Henry Waxman seems to think so: http://spectator.org/archives/2009/02/16/in-all-fairness -snip Waxman is also interested, say sources, in looking at how the Internet is being used for content and free speech purposes. "It's all about diversity in media," says a House Energy staffer, familiar with the meetings. "Does one radio station or one station group control four of the five most powerful outlets in one community? Do four stations in one region carry Rush Limbaugh, and nothing else during the same time slot? Does one heavily trafficked Internet site present one side of an issue and not link to sites that present alternative views? These are some of the questions the chairman is thinking about right now, and we are going to have an FCC that will finally have the people in place to answer them." -snip The House Energy and Commerce Committee is also looking at how it can put in place policies that would allow it greater oversight of the Internet. "Internet radio is becoming a big deal, and we're seeing that some web sites are able to control traffic and information, while other sites that may be of interest or use to citizens get limited traffic because of the way the people search and look for information," says on committee staffer. "We're at very early stages on this, but the chairman has made it clear that oversight of the Internet is one of his top priorities." "This isn't just about Limbaugh or a local radio host most of us haven't heard about," says Democrat committee member. "The FCC and state and local governments also have oversight over the Internet lines and the cable and telecom companies that operate them. We want to get alternative views on radio and TV, but we also want to makes sure those alternative views are read, heard and seen online, which is becoming increasingly video and audio driven. Thanks to the stimulus package, we've established that broadband networks -- the Internet -- are critical, national infrastructure. We think that gives us an opening to look at what runs over that critical infrastructure." Also involved in "brainstorming" on "Fairness Doctrine and online monitoring has been the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, which has published studies pressing for the Fairness Doctrine, as well as the radical MoveOn.org, which has been speaking to committee staff about policies that would allow them to use their five to six million person database to mobilize complaints against radio, TV or online entities they perceive to be limiting free speech or limiting opinion. Holy Cow writes: "Your source is an anonymous letter to the editor." Wrong. Which of these laptops is best value? Ok, I am in the market for a new laptop. I want to spend under $600, but still want quality. I'm not a super big gamer, but would like reasonable performance for a decent game every so often. Nothing crazy intense in graphics and processor-draining specs or anything; I'm not gonna be hosting LAN parties or anything. Just something that can handle an average multiplayer game with average graphics and stuff, if needed. I'm not majoring in digital art media or anything, so I don't need top-of-the line quality in that field, but again, I will be dabbling with a few things here and there; maybe try cutting and piecing together a few video snippits, or using photoshop to touch up or edit some photos a little bit on an amateur level. *** However, I DO often run multiple programs at once. IE, Word, Music-downloading software, IM program, online game, and probably some music too (on top of my anti-virus and antispyware). Maybe not all of these at once, but potentially so. Battery life is a concern of mine...I don't want something that I'm going to have to plug into the wall every hour - that would annoy the hell out of me. Sound quality and crystal-clear screen quality are definately a bonus, but aren't a mega-huge priority for me. Oh, and I HATE Windows Vista...loved XP. But if it means decreased performance otherwise (which unfortunately almost always does mean that nowadays, since they stopped production of XP a while ago), I'll put up with Vista. ============= ============= So far, I've searched around a bit, and I swear - the online deals on laptops just don't seem to be what they used to. But here's what I found so far. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat13504&type=page&pageIdentity=searchDriven&useProductString=true&productString=1218036213682*1218040478391&unProductString=1218041995463*1218041998438*1218036213752*1218084985023*1218041998788*1218041150488*1218071605696*1218053145987*1218040477075*1218040476935&catId http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2034940032%204021&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&CompareItemList=N82E16834200024%2CN82E16834146557 Of those 4, which one/s appear to be the best value, for what I'm looking for? AND IF YOU CAN SUGGEST BETTER CHOICES FOR WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR, IN THE PRICE RANGE I'M LOOKING FOR, PLEASE DO! If you simply reply to this post with a link to a random laptop-selling website, with no direction or suggestions or explanations other than a short little plug for that site...I will hunt you down and beat you with a stick. I want honest advice from the experts. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, in advance.
Can you prove the Media is not liberal bias? Show After Show, MSNBC Smears Limbaugh with 'Phony Soldiers' Distortion By Brent Baker | September 28, 2007 - 22:56 ET All day Friday, even after Rush Limbaugh corrected the misinformation, MSNBC promoted a story fed to them by the far-left Media Matters about how Rush Limbaugh, on Thursday, had called military personnel who served in Iraq and oppose the war “phony soldiers.” Limbaugh opened his noon EDT radio show on Friday by explaining how he was referring not to any real soldier but a phony one, notably Jesse MacBeth, who became a hero to the left when he recounted how his Army unit murdered innocent Iraqis. In fact, he hadn't even completed basic training. Nonetheless, MSNBC headlined a 4pm EDT segment “'PHONY SOLDIERS' INSULT; Rush Limbaugh: U.S. Troops Who Oppose Iraq War are 'Phony.'” Anchor Tamron Hall asserted: “Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh never served in the armed forces, so when he made the following comments about Iraq War veterans who return home to oppose the war, it set off a firestorm of outrage.” Hall ran a clip of Limbaugh saying it is Democrats who need to apologize for insulting the troops, but failed to relay Limbaugh's explanation of who he said was “phony.” Pairing it with MoveOn's “General Betray Us” ad, retired Colonel Jack Jacobs called it “stupid talk” and suggested those in the military “would like people who don't know what they're talking about to just shut up.” At the top of the next hour, Chris Matthews teased Hardball: “Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh says veterans who support withdrawing the troops are 'phony soldiers.' Those are his words.” A guest charged Limbaugh “didn't go to Vietnam because he had a bump on his butt. So, I mean, this guy's a draft-dodger.” Then at 8pm EDT, with “Limbaugh Bashes Vets for Withdrawal” on screen, and briefly “...Phony Soldiers...” over video of Limbaugh, Keith Olbermann teased Countdown: “Comedian Rush Limbaugh tries to back out of his quote: Servicemen protesting the war are quote, 'phony soldiers.'” The Anatomy of a Smear: "Phony Soldiers" Is a Phony Story http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092807/content/01125106.guest.html
Is there a manga or anime like this? (10 points to best answer)? I had a dream a few days ago and it was me dreaming about myself playing a videogame *nerd* and I thought it was a pretty good video game! I liked it anyway and I wanted to make a game from it but i don't have any sorta money to put in so I thought I could do a manga of it if anything, but before I put my effort into it I wanted to ask if there is a manga anime or video game already like this because I could have been a dream from a video game or manga I read a long time ago and don't remember and I don't want legal problems, or it could just turn out that I'm completely uncreative and my unconscious mind came up with the completely most cliche unoriginal idea for a video game or manga ever and there are already 1208421041 others just like it. ok, so the story starts with this girl (just an average girl, late teens, early 20s) who wakes up one day with no control over her body, she starts doing things that she isn't doing herself so basically, shes possessed by something but is completely conscious during the whole thing, so, her body ends up being used for all these awful things for years, during the time that she was possessed a war started in her country and she (technically whoevers controling her body) ended up being like the top, sorta like hitler but not nearly as public, she was like the one basically puppeting and manipulating the war from out of the site of the public (sorry I'm explaining this so bad and that it just jumped from her being possessed to all of the sudden being behind a whole war but I completely forgot a huge part that if I were to make it I would have to fill in, so if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated :D ) so anyway, her country ends up losing the war and are enslaved by the other country. so then one day she wakes up and she has control over her body again. After her ordeal she feels guilty for all the pain shes caused her country so she ends up joining a resistance and she goes on this mission to try and find information from an abandoned library that supposedly had documents from the time of the war. they end up not finding anything of particular importance in the library but she finds a book talking of a legend where a man who was able to jump from body to body and is sorta immortal (he can live for the remainder of life that his current host has but if he stays too long in one body then he'll die along with the host body, however, if he leaves the host body before the host was intended to die then the host body would die) so shes trying to figure out if this is what happened to her and trying to figure out why she isn't dead if this is what happened to her. so the story is basically her trying to find the person that had her possessed for all those years and find out why she isn't dead and why he used her, basically what his ultimate plan is, but how can you find someone that you don't have information on and as soon as you get information on them they can just simply change all the information about them by taking on the life of another person its sorta confusing but I want an opinion. first, is there already a manga, anime or video game similar to this and if so which one? second, what are your opinions on the story and is it worth putting effort in to make a manga out of it? third, any suggestions on how to better develop the plot line and fill in the blanks? thank you if you got through my rant, haha
Joomla First Time User - Help Appreciated.? Hey there. This is my first time setting up my own Joomla website. Any help is apprieciated! My Questions are: - How do you actually buy a Template. I know theres plenty of sites selling them, but how does it work. Can I just do a one off payment and then download the Template to host via FTP? - How much can you alter a template? Like this for example: http://joomla.siteground.com/index.php?mos_change_template=siteground58 Could I make 'Easy customization' and 'Free themes' appear in the one column so all the news is visable without it being cut off. Could I change the Green font and lines to a different color? Could I add a subnavigation? So when I hover/click something in the top right navigation, there is pages WITHIN those pages. So if you had multimedia, you could have Music and Videos as pages within. Sorry for all the 'could i', but basically I want to know how much I can alter and customise the templates. - Thanks, any other useful bits of information are welcome :)

is there a more professional alternative to youtube? So I am a huge youtube user. But I've come to find that youtube is becoming too much of a social networking site rather than a video hosting site. I really hate how they have changed the layout to the entire site (especially your own personal page has been changed (which makes it not so personal anymore if you ask me)). And to top that all off, there are a bunch of teenie boppers that have no sense that upload endless amounts of crap on youtube day after day. Basically, I'm sick of seeing millions of tribute videos that were edited on windows movie maker. I aspire to work with film and video professionally (I am a film student). and I want to be able to show off my work to people that will actually care, as well as understand. to sum that all up.... is there a more professional alternative to youtube (and I'm talking about stuff online, so don't give me any wise ass answers)
what is a site i can advertise my site on? I want to advertise my site, Not like the things that are on top that say: CLICK HERE TO EARN CASH" or crap like that, i mean like youtube, or fourms. plz dont say youtube or any video hosting sites. Please list about 3+ sources, thanks.

Who's side are you on? A recent story has popped up in FoxSports news, about a recent happening at Safeco Field in seattle. From FXSports on MSN: Most of the time, a kiss is just a kiss in the stands at Seattle Mariners games. The crowd hardly even pays attention when fans smooch. Sirbrina Guerrero was told to stop kissing another woman at a Mariners game last week. (Elaine Thompson / Associated Press) But then last week, a lesbian complained that an usher at Safeco Field asked her to stop kissing her date because it was making another fan uncomfortable. The incident has exploded on local TV, on talk radio and in the blogosphere and has touched off a debate over public displays of affection in generally gay-friendly Seattle. "Certain individuals have not yet caught up. Those people see a gay or lesbian couple and they stare or say something," said Josh Friedes of Equal Rights Washington. "This is one of the challenges of being gay. Everyday things can become sources of trauma." As the Mariners played the Boston Red Sox on May 26, Sirbrina Guerrero and her date were approached in the third inning by an usher who told them their kissing was inappropriate, Guerrero said. The usher, Guerrero said, told them he had received a complaint from a woman nearby who said that there were kids in the crowd of nearly 36,000 and that parents would have to explain why two women were kissing. "I was really just shocked," Guerrero said. "Seattle is so gay-friendly. There was a couple like seven rows ahead making out. We were just showing affection." On Thursday, after an internal investigation, the Mariners said in a news release that their seating staff had acted appropriately, and the couple was approached because of their behavior — which included "making out" and "groping" in the stands — and not their sexual orientation. In the release, the Mariners said the women were told they could continue to kiss, but that they had to "tone it down." "The women refused to modify their behavior, began swearing at the seating hosts and complained that they were being singled out for their sexual orientation," the club said. The code of conduct — announced before each game — specifically mentions public displays of affection that are "not appropriate in a public, family setting." Hale said those standards are based on what a "reasonable person" would find inappropriate. Guerrero denied she and her date were groping each other, saying that along with eating garlic fries, they were giving each other brief kisses. On Tuesday, Guerrero said a Mariners director of guest services had apologized to her. The team spokeswoman could not immediately confirm that. After the story broke, the Mariners were blasted by the sex-advice columnist Dan Savage, who wrote about the incident on the blog of the Stranger, an alternative weekly paper. "They go out of their way to say it's a quote-unquote family setting," Savage said. "As a gay season-ticket holder, we've never been quite sure what that means exactly. I constantly see people see making out. My son has noticed and asked, 'Do they show the ballgame on women's foreheads?"' Savage called for a "kiss-in" to protest against the Mariners. Web sites have been swamped with blog postings for and against Guerrero and her date. And the story has people talking in Seattle. "I would be uncomfortable" seeing public displays of affection between lesbians or gay men, said Jim Ridneour, a 54-year-old taxi driver. "I don't think it's right seeing women kissing in public. If I had my family there, I'd have to explain what's going on." "It all depends on the degree," Mark Ackerman said as he waited for a hot dog outside Safeco Field before Wednesday's game. "Even for heterosexual couples." Since the incident, Guerrero's job and her past have come under scrutiny. She works at a bar known for scantily clad women and was a contestant on the MTV reality show "A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila," in which women and men compete for the affection of a bisexual Internet celebrity. "People are saying it's 15 more minutes for my career," Guerrero said of the ballpark furor, "but this is not making me look very good." In 2007, an Oregon transit agency chief apologized after a lesbian teenager was kicked off a bus when a passenger complained about her kissing another girl. Also in 2007, a gay rights group protested a Kansas City, Mo., restaurant they said ejected four women because two of them kissed, and a Texas state trooper was placed on probation in 2004 for telling two gay men who were kissing at the state Capitol that homosexual conduct was illegal in Texas. "There's a double standard. That's the bottom line," said Pat Griffin, director of the It Takes a Team! Education Campaign, an initiative from the Women's Sports Foundation to eliminate homophobia in sports.

Posted By: shaista @ 03/01/2008 5:36:46 AM Comment: THE lunch hosted by Mr Asif Zardari for the newly elected members of the three leading parties on Feb 27 may well be remembered as a landmark in the long awaited transition to a democratic dispensation in Pakistan. The squalls that rocked the state on Oct 12, 1999 and in the form of the 17th amendment inflicted much damage. Then, the catastrophe of Nov 3 put all salvaging efforts beyond the capacity of any single party. The existing distortions in that historic but half-alive Constitution present a nightmare and demand the exercise of the highest form of political wisdom and legal expertise. The process of eliminating them by creating a new interface between politics and law has just begun. Pakistan???s present crisis is characterised by the bitter harvest of constitutional violations, growing imbalance between a power-hungry centre and the handicapped federating units, uncontrollable violence by ever-proliferating bands of extremists and, above all, by a rapidly rising table of sub-surface social anger at glaring inequalities of income and opportunity. A reasonably broad-based coalition government may provide a healing touch. There is no great virtue in a two-party system anymore as, for quite some time to come, regional aspirations will deepen particular identities of the constitutive elements of a diverse nation. The greatest achievement of the three top leaders present at Mr Zardari???s lunch is that they successfully persuaded their followers that these identities were perfectly compatible with an overarching national identity. Scratch the surface and lurking just beneath the protest against the humiliation of the higher judiciary and repeated violations of the Constitution is a palpable anguish of poverty and deprivation. Pakistan must eschew politics of vendetta but that does not mean that every crime against the state and society be brushed under the carpet. It needs a high-powered Commission on Truth, Justice and Reconciliation in the interest of historical accuracy and to build dykes for future security. We need to replace mercenary relations with relations based on mutual respect, community of interests and coordinated pursuit of common objectives within our respective national parameters. A strong and stable national coalition can be built around the present understanding between the PPP, PML-N and ANP. The US-led West should welcome it and not undermine it as it alone can make Pakistan???s battle against militant extremists effective The west should to withdraw their support from the one Musharaf who loathed by the people at maximum Posted By: shaista @ 03/01/2008 5:07:40 AM Comment: THE results of the election that took place on Feb 18 were astonishing. President Musharraf???s supporting party Pakistan Muslim League (Q) was wiped out and the ministers who were lucky enough to keep their seats are now at a safe distance from President Musharraf. The people at large want the president to go with no other choice. However, the US has been unduly interfering in our politics as its Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher has emphasised the need to continue President Musharraf???s rule. Pakistan has remained under military rule for more than half of its life, and the people no longer want any dictator to rule over them. As the PPP has secured the maximum number of seats, followed by the PML (N), the ties made between these parties also pose a serious challenge to the president???s stay any further in office. His rule for eight long years has brought many hardships to the nation and now he should quit The US slogan for democracy is and justice is just a slogan and in real and practicle not willing to be so for their own agenda From whome to expect the justice and democracy in the world the only power it self violate This is not the Musharaf pakistan but of 1,600/-Millions people and what they think of the rest This is not in the benifit of US to support the cruel one of the country who now the people think as Mechile G.Choaf The people and the young generation have very strong anti US sentiments due to their blind support of Dictator Musharaf This is not a good sign and this will increase with passage of time Posted By: eddiewhere @ 02/29/2008 2:12:44 AM Comment: IN THIS ENVIORNMENT OF ECONOMIC FEUDALISM WHERE THE MIDDLE CLASS MUST SUFFER IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE pROFITS OF MULTINATIONAL CORpORATIONS, WHO BENEFIT FROM CHEAp LABOR, THE AMERICAN DREAM HAS BEEN LOST. People in Pakistan voted in favor of Bhutto's party, not for Zardari, who was responsible for her twice ouster from the Premiership due to his shameful dirty roles of Mr.10%. Country's biggest grass root party preaching "Government of the People, by the People, for the People", which was founded on the basic principle of providing them respectable " Bread, Dress and Shelter", was created by Bhutto, hanged by a military dictator. Now, the party is orphaned in a bomb-blast death of his daughter during another military rule. Situation brings forth her rootless spouse, "Mr.Tenpercent Zardari", holding the People's mandate ( at ransom?), for endless exploits. Whatever the words mean, they cannot change the genes. The name "Zardari" literally means "Gold-Lord" and he lives his name literally. He was responsible for legislating and monopolizing gold import into Pakistan (through an Emirates based gold-tycoon of Pakistan origin) on a ridiculous 2% custom duty and made unfathomable ocean of fortune. If the US administration is ready," to let them have their rounds of discussions, still expecting the [Pakistani] Army to take the necessary military action, counting on an interesting transition", then the whole riddle is solved. The ongoing change in Pakistan is not a change of " act" in the drama being staged but, a "change of gear into a powerful all terrain drive", to move forward on the designed road-map, crossing effectively all rugged and bogging tracts en-route. Posted By: shaista @ 02/25/2008 5:19:05 AM Comment: The newly retired General Musharraf has displayed no intention of leaving office despite his king party losing even after plenty of evidence that he had planned to rig the elections. The caretaker government was anything but neutral and the Election Commission was suspect. But pressure from Washington compelled him to change his plans. Had he still engaged in massive rigging, not only would he have drawn Washington???s ire but also evoked ugly street protests. He knew that if the ???agitators??? caused the country to come to a standstill, the army would distance itself from him. Without their protection, he would not last a day in office. The habitual offender Musharaf this time fail for not carrying out a full pleadge crime of rigging due to international observer existing These people will never be convinced that it is time for the ex-general to go. To them, he is the embodiment of truth, the doer of all good things, and the prince of enlightened moderation without whom Pakistan would return to the Dark Ages. It is time for Musharraf, to wake up and realise that the game is over. Everything Musharraf stood for was repudiated on Feb 18. The electoral results have made it clear, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the people do not wish to see Musharraf holding court on radio and television day in and day out. Aitzaz Ahsan spoke for millions when he said, ???Musharraf is the most hated & loathed man in Pakistan.??? During the last several months, poll after poll showed Musharraf???s popularity plummeting like a lead coin in a bottomless well. But he continued to reject the polls by saying that they only represented the views of a few thousand people and asserted vainly that he was vastly popular in the populous countryside. But even the King???s party was not taken in by the myths spun out by the monarch. It knew that once rigging was no longer an option, its fate was sealed. Why else would they seek to obtain the release of one of the key instigators of the Lal Masjid takeover, Abdul Aziz, just days prior to the vote? This was an obvious ploy designed to play on the religious sympathies of the people and to garner much needed votes. How else could one justify releasing a real and confirmed terrorist from jail while holding the nation???s eminent justices and barristers under house arrest? Musharraf had said not too long ago that he would step down when he saw that the people were no longer with him. He said he was continuing as president only because it was in the national interest. He would rather be playing golf or tennis, he noted, but the situation required him to sacrifice his personal interests. Well, the time has now come for him to do the nation a favour and quit as he is the only evil for this country. The only worry Americans have about the moment to keep up Musharraf in Presidency because Musharraf has amended the constitution in such a way no one else can do any thing without his consent and authority. This is worrisome for the new elected politicians. They know very much the hard fact that they have not been elected on merits, it is the hatred against Musharraf they have en-cashed. Because Musharraf have destroyed the true democrative spirit of the Pakistan???s Constitution by extremely autocratic and extra constitutional way before conducting the general election so that he could do the post election rigging. If those powers are not taken away from the presidency then the politicians will be nothing more than tools in his hands. If the politicians failed to restore highest court judges that will mean they are empty handed. Moreover they won???t be able to face their voters who have sent them Islamabad to clean up the mess and deliver good to them. Here we go again with Ebay Making more Money What do you think about it? Dear christophervegas, Since its debut in 1995, the eBay marketplace has continually evolved to meet the needs of the eBay Community. For the most part, the behavior of buyers and sellers has naturally adapted to changing conditions -- over time, we've learned to allow the marketplace to direct itself as much as possible. On some occasions, though -- in the interest of the eBay marketplace's long-term vitality -- we've had to step in and implement new policies, introduce new formats, or make changes to our fee structure to create needed incentives for eBay members. Put simply, we at eBay have two basic roles: to deliver the best overall value for buyers, and to maximize cash flow for sellers. As eBay has grown over the years, we've added various enhancements and tools to the site -- but in essence, our "products" are two types of listings: Core listings (auction-style, auction-style with Buy It Now, and Fixed Price) deliver the signature eBay buying experience. For sellers, they're the fastest way to sell inventory on the Internet -- the only place where items typically sell within about two weeks. Store Inventory listings were introduced in 2001 and intended as a low-risk way for sellers to display large amounts of product in their eBay Store. This format employs low insertion fees and higher final value fees to encourage an abundance of inventory on the site. Amid all this change, one thing has remained constant: auction-style listings are the foundation of eBay. Auction-style and other core listings made eBay what it is today -- and they'll always be front and center on eBay.com. They account for about 91% of the gross merchandise value sold on eBay.com. But recently, we've been wrestling with some troubling facts: Store Inventory listings now comprise about 83% of active eBay.com listings on average. While eBay.com core listings typically sell in about two weeks, Store Inventory listings on average take 14 times longer to sell. In some media categories, Store Inventory listings take more than 40 times longer to sell than core listings. And, when you compare our operations costs for an average Store Inventory listing and an average core listing - factoring in the duration of each - our cost to host a Store Inventory listing is more than 50% higher than for a core listing. In fact, current Store Inventory insertion fees don't cover eBay's costs for hosting them. It's vitally important -- to your business and ours -- that we maintain a healthy balance between listing formats on the eBay marketplace, and ensure that inventory conversion across the site remains strong. So we're taking action. Today, I want to inform you of changes we're making to eBay.com -- changes intended to rebalance the overall eBay marketplace by further distinguishing the roles of core listing formats and our Store Inventory format. In short, we're improving the advantages of selling in core listing formats -- and taking action to manage the proportion of Store Inventory listings -- to ensure that the buying experience on eBay stays true to shoppers' expectations. Core Listings Core listing fees will remain unchanged. So for the vast majority of eBay sellers who use only these formats, their fees are not increasing. And we'll be providing greater exposure for core listings on eBay Express. In late August, we'll begin displaying auction-style listings with Buy It Now on eBay Express for qualifying sellers. Also in late August, core fixed price and auction-style Buy It Now listings that qualify for eBay Express will be advantaged over Store Inventory listings. Also, in response to the requests of many large sellers, we're raising the 10-item multiple listings limit to 15, effective Aug. 22. Store Inventory Listings For those of you who operate an eBay Store, we're making changes to Store Inventory listing fees, as well as to the on-site exposure we provide for this listing format. We'll begin charging variable insertion fees for Store Inventory listings, as we do for core listings. Beginning Aug. 22, eBay.com Store Inventory format insertion fees will be tiered with an item's starting price. These Store Inventory format insertion fees take effect Aug. 22, 2006: Starting Price New Insertion Fee Current Fee $0.01 -- 24.99 5¢ 2¢ $25.00 and higher 10¢ 2¢ Some Store Inventory format final value fees also will also increase, effective Aug. 22, 2006: Selling Price New Final Value Fee Current Fee $0.01 -- 25.00 10% 8% $25.01 -- 100.00 7% 5% $100.01 -- 1,000.00 5% (no change) 5% $1,000.01 and higher 3% (no change) 3% Please note that for current listings, the new final value fees will apply only after these listings are renewed. For more detailed information on these fee changes, please see our fee changes overview. For some time, we've been working to identify the best way to display Store Inventory listings on the site. In the spring, we pledged to sellers that we would test a variety of ways to mingle their Store Inventory listings with core listings on eBay.com. We've tested several alternatives and these tests showed the ideal approach is how we're doing it today - that is, when a buyer's search returns 30 or less core listings, we display up to 30 Store Inventory listings. This is what we'll stick with going forward. However, starting in about a month, we'll also include an unlimited number of Store Inventory listings after all matching core listings, when the buyer clicks the Buy It Now listings tab at the top of every search results page. When the buyer hasn't selected this option, eBay.com will display Store Inventory listings along with core listings as described above. Half.com Listings Added to eBay.com Search Results I recognize that sellers in the Books, Movies, Music and Video Games categories will have unique challenges with the changes we're making. As many of our media sellers have requested, starting in late August we'll again provide visibility for Half.com listings in core search results, by bringing back the Half.com listings merchandising feature we used previously (click here for an example). We're also exploring additional ways to promote Half.com listings in search results on both eBay.com and eBay Express. How These Changes Affect You I'm confident the actions we're taking are the right thing to do for the overall eBay Community. We'll more effectively deliver on our buyers' needs and expectations. And for sellers, these changes will ensure that eBay remains a differentiated and distinct e-commerce channel with fast inventory turnover. I know there's a lot to digest here, and that you're probably most interested in quickly determining if and how these changes will impact your business. A typical eBay Stores seller who uses Store Inventory format -- making no adjustments to his or her selling strategy following these changes -- will experience an overall fee increase of less than six percent, based on our analysis of all June selling activity. Of course, you need to clearly understand the impact on your business -- which could be greater or less than six percent. To get started, please visit the seller resources page or consult the Frequently Asked Questions we've prepared. Also, use your seller support resources in Customer Support. Our CS teams are fully prepared to help you understand the effect on your business, and discuss your options for adjusting your eBay selling strategy to minimize impact to your bottom line. In addition -- to help eBay Stores sellers make informed decisions about any changes to their selling strategies -- we're making eBay Marketplace Research Basic available to them at no cost for eight weeks, starting today. Through September 19, eBay Stores sellers can use this data to compare selling formats or determine how best to price inventory on eBay. You can access eBay Marketplace Research here. I'll be hosting a Community Town Hall discussion on Thursday, July 20th at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time, where I'll answer your questions. Please click here for more details on the Town Hall, or to submit a question in advance. Sincerely, Bill Cobb President eBay North America

A new kind of politics? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0704060020apr06,1,1855420.story?coll=chi-news-hed&?track=sto-topstory MEXICANS IN CHICAGO: A NEW KIND OF POLITICS Influence on both sides of the border Activists' political power is rising in Chicago and their homeland, as they seek reforms through marches and money Advertisement By Antonio Olivo and Oscar Avila Tribune staff reporters April 6, 2007 To outsiders, the men and women gathered inside a sleepy West Side restaurant may have seemed unlikely power brokers: a janitor, a real estate agent and others hardly known outside their circuit of neighborhood dances and back-yard barbecues. Jose Luis Gutierrez, who plotted strategy with the group as a soccer match flickered on a nearby TV, was himself a wholesale grocer until last year. But Gutierrez is now a top aide to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and he was joined at the table by leaders of Chicago-area Mexican immigrant clubs, the engines behind a new political movement that is making itself felt from Illinois to Michoacan. Gutierrez received smiling nods when he likened the political muscle of the region's 563,000 Mexican immigrants to the power of Irish-Americans in the 19th and 20th Centuries, who came to control the Chicago machine. In May, the strength of Mexicans will be on display when many of the region's 300 immigrant clubs -- known as "hometown associations" -- will help organize a march in downtown Chicago a year after their political coming-out party, demonstrations that flooded the Loop last spring and charged the national immigration debate. For decades Mexican hometown associations have functioned as social networks whose members pooled their money earned here to help build new schools or churches back in Mexico. But leaders in Chicago's largest immigrant group have a more ambitious worldview than their predecessors, even more than the ethnic blocs that preceded them decades ago. Some, like Gutierrez, wield growing influence in both countries. One morning, he's unveiling a blueprint for more immigrant services in Illinois as director of the state's Office of New Americans Policy and Advocacy. The next night, he's brainstorming with activists in his home state of Michoacan about a slate of candidates for Mexico's congress. An active role in Mexican politics might seem at odds with building political influence here. But Gutierrez and others say they form a budding new political consciousness among Mexican immigrants -- a "third nation" of sorts that transcends the border, advancing the community's cause on both sides. "The nation-state concept is changing," said Gutierrez, 46, who came to Chicago in 1986 and led one of the Midwest's largest federations of hometown associations. "You don't have to say, `I am Mexican,' or, `I am American.' You can be a good Mexican citizen and a good American citizen and not have that be a conflict of interest. Sovereignty is flexible." That concept worries some U.S. officials and scholars who see the dual loyalty as undermining the assimilation of Mexican immigrants. Irish, German and Polish immigrants eventually melded into Chicago's landscape, their ties to their native soil largely sentimental. But Mexican immigrants today are linked to their homeland like no group before, scholars say, connected by NAFTA, satellite TV, the Internet, cell phones and cheap non-stop flights. In Mexico, their power stems from the nearly $25 billion these immigrants send home every year, the country's second-highest source of income behind oil. Their political influence surfaces in places like Teloloapan, far up in the cactus-filled hills of the state of Guerrero, where a Chicago restaurateur helped build new roads and business. Grateful townspeople elected him mayor in a landslide. In the U.S., immigrants' power is driven by numbers and a growing deftness at the levers of this country's political machinery. That recently manifested itself in a fledgling political action committee called Mexicans for Political Progress, which raised $23,000 for Blagojevich's re-election and rallied volunteers to walk precincts during November's election. An unfolding movement Fabian Morales, a soft-spoken Realtor with a well-clipped mustache, stands at the center of the unfolding movement. He handled logistics for three massive immigration marches in Chicago last year -- including a four-day walk to suburban Batavia -- and co-founded Mexicans for Political Progress. After coming to Chicago in 1970, Morales helped launch one of the city's then-few hometown clubs, devoted to his tiny native village of Xonacatla, Guerrero. Back then, Xonacatla was without roads, potable water or electricity. It was a slow journey from other towns by foot or horseback, Morales said. The club members in Chicago resolved to change that. Collecting $50 to $100 at a time, Morales and others raised enough through barbecues and door-to-door soliciting to replace a house used for worship services with a towering marble church that rises from the green hillside. Morales has since helped develop CONFEMEX, an umbrella organization for most of the hometown clubs in the Midwest. Among other things, the group is a central voice in economic development in Mexico, representing an estimated $340 million in projects generated by U.S.-based hometown associations in the last five years, according to Mexican federal officials. "We want to focus on creating more jobs there so they don't have to think about emigrating," Morales said. The rising activity of hometown associations caught the eye of the Mexican government, which eventually created a "3-for-1" matching project, where federal, state and local governments split the cost of a new bridge or computer center with the U.S.-based groups. Those projects have given Mexican immigrants "a great moral authority" in their homeland, as well as political cachet, said Carlos Gonzalez, executive director of the Institute for Mexicans in the Exterior, or IME, a Mexican federal government agency that fosters stronger ties with expatriates. "During the 1970s, [Mexicans] called the people who left Mexico and acclimated to the U.S. 'pocho,' which, if you look in the dictionary, means 'spoiled fruit,' " Gonzalez said. "The change we've seen in the public perception of Mexicans in the exterior has been 180 degrees." In 2006, citizens abroad were allowed to vote in Mexican presidential elections for the first time. Leaders are also pushing for changes that would allow expatriates to vote in local elections and even hold elective offices while residing abroad. Recently, Gutierrez and others persuaded Michoacan to become the first state in Mexico to extend voting rights to expatriates. Their rationale: Almost half of those born in Michoacan, Zacatecas and several other Mexican states now live in the U.S. Timoteo "Alex" Manjarrez, 44, is among a small but growing number of Mexican immigrants making a bolder claim in their motherland. Arriving from his native town of Teloloapan, Guerrero, in 1980, Manjarrez spent 19 years in Chicago. The stocky, boyish-looking immigrant worked for years as a dishwasher at the Columbia Yacht Club and, eventually, became owner of three Mexican restaurants in the city. Fulfilling a desire shared by many immigrants, Manjarrez moved back to his native town in 1999 with enough money for his family to live comfortably. But the place he had longed for all those years was still frustratingly poor, despite the investments Manjarrez's hometown club made in new roads and other improvements. Manjarrez, who holds both Mexican and U.S. citizenship, settled in and quickly built a new health club and a hacienda-style restaurant named La Condesa, after the three he still owns in Chicago. In 2004, he ran for mayor of Teloloapan. With long-distance backing from his hometown club friends in Chicago, who sent money and telephoned friends and local officials on his behalf, Manjarrez won handily. 'The city that works' Since taking office, the man who sees Mayor Richard M. Daley as a political role model has pushed to remake Teloloapan into a Mexican version of "the city that works." The effort includes newly paved streets, a recreation center that replaces a local swamp known as "black waters," and a towering hotel being built privately by Manjarrez's family. Next to a new medical clinic, a donated Chicago ambulance sits in the parking lot. Its emblem has been painted over, but it serves as a reminder of the continued links Manjarrez has to his former city, where he maintains a home near Midway Airport, votes in U.S. elections and checks in on his businesses. Aurelio Santamaria Bahena, mayor of a town near Manjarrez's called Tlapehuala, labeled such changes "a blessing" for an area of Mexico dominated by crumbling lean-to houses and children in bare feet pulling bone-thin donkeys. But, as with other parts of the country where the immigrant handprint is deepening, the introduction of U.S.-style governance has also bred resentment. Local leaders of Manjarrez's own Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) are trying to drum him out of office, arguing he is too brash and condescending. The mayor counters the fight is about his efforts to take away "a plate of corruption that they've been able to eat from for years." The conflict was an uncomfortable backdrop during a recent PRD strategy meeting at a restaurant in Chilpancingo, Guerrero's capital. Headlines that morning featured a march against Manjarrez, orchestrated by his opponents. "People see you as an outsider," a worried Santamaria cautioned Manjarrez. "People don't think you see things as they are here." Manjarrez, wearing a black "La Condesa" windbreaker, patted his friend on the back and smiled. He had a media plan, one that might have made Daley proud. "We'll publish photos of the streets of Teloloapan before and after I came into office," Manjarrez said. "And, we'll ask the people: `Which would you prefer?' " That same week, Mexican immigrants from the U.S. and Canada met in Mexico City, as members of an advisory council created by the Mexican government. With a brash American style, they soon escalated their advice to demands, the members' voices echoing through the meeting hall. Morales, the Chicago Realtor, and about 100 other council members pushed Mexico to lobby the U.S. harder on immigration reform. They chastised their hosts for not creating more jobs. Buttonholing federal legislators in hallways, they reminded elected officials how much their districts relied on money sent from the U.S. They want 'results now' Gregorio Luke, a blond member of the council from Los Angeles partial to designer suits, observed that this kind of behavior wouldn't exist in a purely Mexican forum, where deference toward authority guides nearly all dialogue. "These people come here speaking Spanish, but they're negotiating as Americans," said Luke, a museum director who once oversaw cultural affairs at the Los Angeles Mexican Consulate. "They want to see results now." The meeting of the advisory council also illustrated the provocative overlap of Mexican and American political action. In addition to all-day strategy sessions on how to improve Mexico, council members brainstormed over late-night drinks on next moves in the fight for U.S. immigration reform. Many members had used their existing e-mail network to coordinate simultaneous demonstrations in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities. Though not active participants in the U.S. immigrant movement, Mexican officials urged their compatriots to keep on fighting. "Let there be no barriers or walls between Mexicans here on the inside and the outside," former Mexican President Vicente Fox told the group, referring to a 2006 U.S. law that allows for a 700-mile fence to be built at the border. The audience stood and cheered. The idea that the Mexican government might be helping its nationals shape U.S. politics has raised red flags, both in the halls of academia and in the more volatile world of talk radio and the Internet. Robert Leiken, director of the immigration and national security program at the right-leaning Nixon Center in Washington, argued that binational activism among Mexican immigrants is bad for both countries. In the U.S., the meetings in Spanish and the often-passionate interest in Mexico's future hinder assimilation, he said. In Mexico, the relationship to hometown associations fosters an unhealthy economic dependence on U.S. remittances. "If I went out to Pilsen and spent some time with people from a hometown association, I'd think these are really cool people," Leiken said. But, "Standing back and looking at this from a social policy standpoint, I see some real problems." James McCann, a Purdue University political science professor, found that immigrants interested in Mexican affairs were more likely to participate in U.S. politics. He helped interview about 1,100 Mexican immigrants and found that hometown clubs promoted activism. "The conventional wisdom is that any transnational engagement is going to suck the oxygen out of your civic life in the States," McCann said. "But it seems that if you open a new avenue of expression in Mexico, that new avenue might pay some other dividends in the U.S." Some of those dividends went directly to the Blagojevich campaign last fall, when the governor found himself being serenaded by a trumpet-playing mariachi band inside the Hacienda Tecalitlan restaurant on the Near Northwest Side. Near a trickling courtyard fountain, Morales praised the governor in Spanish at the kickoff dinner for the Mexicans for Political Progress PAC. While Morales once raised money for his hometown with $1 tamales, the price here was as much as $500 a plate. "Let us demonstrate our political power by voting in the election, by voting for our friends interested in the prosperity of Mexicans. Friends like Gov. Rod Blagojevich!" Morales told the crowd. Blagojevich, who speaks a hint of Spanish, took the microphone and shouted: "Viva Chivas!" a reference to a popular Mexican soccer team. When the laughter and applause subsided, he switched to English and added: "By organizing, you are empowering a community. Your voice will be heard." The mood is darker in northwest suburban Carpentersville, where a growing Mexican community has rallied in large numbers in the face of a local backlash against undocumented immigrants. Last fall, about 3,000 Mexican immigrants and their supporters turned up outside Carpentersville's City Hall in an unexpected show of opposition to a proposed ordinance that would penalize landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and employers who hire them. The crowd was so riled a vote on the ordinance was postponed and has yet to be taken. The quick response came largely due to the hometown association representing the village of La Purisima, Michoacan, local activists said. The club turned to its telephone list of 400 families, said Salvador Balleno, the group's president. The turnout was a victory, but it has not deterred Carpentersville trustees from other proposals that would allow local police to trigger deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants and make English the village's official language. And as Balleno has struggled to register voters and rally volunteers for this month's village elections, even sympathetic politicians have seemed hesitant to link themselves too closely with the hometown association. Balleno now fears the village's hard-liners have the upper hand, intimidating some of the immigrants who protested last fall. "The [club] members know that if these people stay [in office] it is going to affect their kids," Balleno said, sounding anxious that an opportunity was slipping through his fingers. Jose Artemio Arreola, a key organizer of next month's march in Chicago, has been actively monitoring the battle in Carpentersville. He sees the activity there as part of a plan to create a political empire for Mexican immigrants, one linking hometown associations in Chicago and other cities to labor unions and Mexico's congress. His strategy includes moving back to his native state of Michoacan to run for congress there, something Arreola never imagined doing when he left a town overrun by poverty and ruled by local drug kingpins. He got his start in Chicago working in a plastics factory. Frustrated by the union representation there, he ran for shop steward and won. Unable to speak English, he relied on his bilingual co-workers to help him negotiate union contracts. He has since become a school janitor in Oak Park. The position pays little, but it has allowed Arreola to climb the ranks of the Service Employees International Union, where he has become key in that union's national efforts to tap further into the country's exploding Mexican immigrant workforce. All the while, Arreola has used the sharp elbows and old-school union tactics acquired in Chicago to become a power broker in his hometown of Acuitzio del Canje. He started in 2004 when the local mayor refused to back projects proposed by his hometown association. Arreola, a burly backslapper partial to gold neck chains, recalled thinking: "I need to take them out." He recruited a teacher to run for mayor in the Mexican town. Arreola then brought back a town phone book and, with others in Chicago, called voters one by one, promising a stream of U.S. investment if his candidate won. The incumbent opted for traditional rallies and car tours through town with a bullhorn. More than two years later, sitting in a Pilsen restaurant, Arreola opened a laptop computer and showed off the fruits of what proved to be an easy victory. Pictures of a new retirement home popped onto the screen, one featuring a grinning Arreola at a groundbreaking ceremony. Another showed a new computer lab with 40 computers for local schoolchildren, an investment in the future of Acuitzio del Canje. The town's name comes from an 1865 decision to make it the site for a "canje," or exchange of prisoners between warring Mexican and French troops. Sitting deep in the dusty mountains of Michoacan, it was neutral ground back then, Arreola explained, territory that didn't fully belong to either country but, in some ways, belonged to both. ---------- aolivo@tribune.com oavila@tribune.com - - - IN THE WEB EDITION Jose Artemio Arreola is one of several Mexican hometown association leaders in Chicago with multiple connections in Mexico and the U.S. From helping organize last year's massive immigration marches to slating political candidates in his home state, he wields influence on both sides of the border. I wrote this story for english class, it is a true story, do you like it? I was once a guidance counselour at a high school, but was fired. Then, I became a mall security guard, but was fired. Now I live with my mom. This time of year, girl scouts come around our neighborhood collecting donations for charities. One fine afternoon, a group of a few girls came up to my house and asked for a donation. It made me angry to think that they were going around conning people out of their hard earned money and giving it to some charity called 'Riley's Children's Hospital.' But anyway, I reached into my pocket, pulled out 12 cents in change, some lint, and an old piece of hard candy and threw it into their jar, then slammed the door shut. I peered out of the peephole in my door and saw the little girl counting out the change. She took out four quarters, handed them to her mother, and her mother handed her a dollar to put in the jar. I heard her say something about making the jar easier to carry, but I'm not stupid, I knew what they were really up to. So I quickly threw on my shoes and hopped in my car. I tailed the young con artist for twenty blocks until she, her friends, and her mom all got into their mini-van and headed home. I took down her address and then drove to the local hardware store. I picked up a crowbar and some matches, then went by the gas station and bought twenty gallons of unleaded gasoline. I then played the waiting game. I waited and waited until the sun went down and night set in. I got into my closet, pulled on some work gloves and a ski mask, then set out for the con artist's house. I snuck around back and encountered my first obstacle, the family dog. I made a trail of sausages leading from her yard to ten miles down the road and let the dog free to follow it. Once I returned to the backyward, I saw that the con artist and her friends were having a slumber party. It disgusted me. As they sat eating their dinner, I realized I needed a distraction of some sort. I whipped out my cell phone and dialed the number for the local Pizza Hut. I order eighteen extra large pizzas with olives, tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, anchovies, onions, peppers, sausage, ham, pineapple, pepperoni, and zucchini on top, 16 orders of cheezy breads, twenty two liters of coke, and 600 wings to their address. The bill came to $873.34. A couple of hours later I watched in delight as a young pizza boy struggled to push a wheel barrow full of food up to the house. He was out of breath as he rang the doorbell. The con artist's father answered the door and informed the por young pizza boy that he did not order that food. The pizza boy began to cry in fear of losing his job, but the father of the con artist comforted him and told him that he would pay for the food anyway, and gave him a nice sized tip. The father the retreated into the house with the food, declaring to his family that God had sent them the pizza and that they needed to use it for a specific reason. He said they could have all the pizza they wanted and they he would take some of it down to the local homeless shelter. I then made sure that the food would never arrive, by cutting the brake cables on his car. When they all went outside to load the food into the car, I broke the back upstairs window with a crowbar. I got inside her parent's roomand began to trash the place. I found family photos, baby journals, wedding photos, and a multitude of other things that I set on fire. The smell of the smoke must have carried to the other upstairs rooms, because the older deadbeat teenage brother of the conartist soon entered the room. I quickly silenced him by knocking him out with the crowbar, then threw him outside from the second floor. I set fire to her father's immigration papers and put his green card through their paper shredder. I then entered the con artist's brother's room. It had all kinds of books which I tore the pages out of. I also found that he had left his cell phone on and charging, so I took pictures of my genitals and sent them to his family, friends, and his girlfriend along with a message that read "F*ck you, c*ckf*ckers!!" I tore down all of his posters and pissed on his bed. I found a small safe that said "top secret." I picked the lock to find a marijuana cigarette, a lighter, a wallet sized photo of a blonde haired girl with several love letters from her. I stole the marijuana, then edited the love letters to describe very inappropriate things, then I drew a moustache in permanent ink on her picture. I put them back inside the safe, along with anything of value I could find in his room that was useless to me. I then took out an old key I had with me and broke it off in the lock, then put the safe through the back window. A delightful crash came from the inside and I knew that all his beloved possesions were ruined. Once I finished drawing on the walls with permanent marker, I decided to go outside and look in their garage. I heard the clan of con artists outside loading the car, as I began work on the minivan in the garage. I scratched up the paint and broke off the rear view mirrors. I used my trusty crowbar to smash the head and tail lights. I got inside that car and used the crowbar to pop out the stereo, which I slipped into my gunny sack. I searched the glove compartment and found all sorts of insurance papers, which i tore to shreds, then stole all the cds in the car. I took a bucket from the garage, filled it with water, then filled the gas tank with water. I slashed the tires then popped the hood and did major damage to the engine. I tore up the fabric on the seats and smashed the rest of the windows. I stole the hubcaps and then exited the garage. My next stop was the toolshed. Inside were several expensive tools, drills, power wrenches, hammers, nail guns. I stole everything I could, then filled the gas tank of their brand new John Deer lawnmower with sand that were placed convieniently in the corner of the shed. I then took out the key, broke off the steering wheel, and took off the mower blade. I left the steering wheel outside the door of the shed, threw the key in the woods by the shed, and then used the blade to puncture their air conditioner. I walked over the brother of the con artist on my way back to the house and saw that he had begun to wake up, so I kicked him in the head a couple of times so make sure he was still unconcious. I reached into his pocket and stole his wallet, then gave him another kick in the head just for the hell of it. I climbed back up into the house and crept into the hallway. I heard a toilet flush. One of the con artist's accomplices stood in the hallway, looking at me with her jaw dropped. I atatcked swiftly, striking her head with the crowbar. I was sure she was unconcious as I stuffed her into the laundry chute, where she fell ot the basement and landed on a soft pile of clothes. I then went into the bathroom of the con artist's house and began to trash it. I squeezed the containers of toothpaste and shampoo everywhere, spread the floss out so it looped on everything everywhere. I clogged up the toilet and then took a dump in it. I tore down the shower curtains and broke the tiles on the bathrooms wall with the curtain rod. I then cracked open the medicine cabinet, salvaged the perscription drugs, then began to generously distribute asprins, tylenol, pepto bismo, and all sorts of cought syrups all over the bathroom floor. I then clogged the shower, and took a dump in it and on the floor then smeared it everywhere. I coated the walls in vaseline, then broke the bathroom scale. I then smashed the bathroom mirror. I noticed a small decoration of shells and air freshener leaves on the back of the toilet. I quickly took the leaves and crumpled them up, then stomped on the shells until they had broken up into dust. I took shaving cream and sprayed it everywhere, then broke the sink off the wall and smashed the toilet seat. I plugged the hole in the wall with toilet paper, and then took the rest of the paper and spread it everywhere in the bathroom, then used the remaining toothpaste to create a sort of paper machet which covered much if the bathroom floor. I took down any decorations that hung on the wall and did away with them. I then spilled the wastebasket on the floor and left. I then entered the den. I immediately began to search the drawers and found all sorts of important insurance papers regarding fore, burglary, life insurance, automobiles, and several other important things. I quickly reached into my bag and produced the lighter I had stolen from the con artist's brother. I lit the papers and watched in delight as all they had worked for and spent their hard earned money on was engulfed in flames and disappeared. I then sat up at the computer desk and began to browse what was stored on their computer. I first went to 'my documents' and deleted all sorts of important business presentations that the father of the con artist had prepared for work. I then went to 'my pictures' and highlighted everything. I felt a burst of happiness as my finger pressed down on the delete button. I then visited a host of certain websites that I know of and downloaded loads and loads of hardcore, illegal pornography. I set their desktop background to one of these most delightful pictures and left the rest to pollute all sorts of other files on their computer. It was then that I realized I had saved her father's wallet from the flames, so I quickly opened it up to search it. My hands pulled out a credit card. I quickly went to all sorts of different sites ranging from adult toy stores to automobile sites. I ordered thousands of dollars of stuff to random addresses around the city, and to top it all off, I back ordered a Lamborghini Murcielago. Just then, her brother's cell phone went off, and I was buffeted by several angry messages from his friends and family responding to the highly offensive pictures that I sent them. In order to further the damage done to this boy, I visited MySpace.com from their computer and found that his password had saved to the computer. I got on and gave his page a complete makeover. The background was now a large disgusting picture, and his profile picture was a picture of my genitals. I sent offensive messages to everyone on his list. I realized that all passwords would automatically save into this computer, so I got into his email and changed his myspace password, then cancelled his email account. This all gave me another idea. According to the notes placed on the top of the desk, her father had an email account as well. I tried to get into it and was delighted to find that the password had been saved. I went through it and found all sorts of business contacts, family, and friends, and bombarded all of them with disgusting hardcore pornography via email. One man, who had been given the title of 'boss' on the email contacts list, was especially important for me to offend. I found the most offensive and disgusting videos and photos I could, and sent them to his address, along with a short and sweet message telling him that those were the things I did to his wife last night. To top this all off, I went and found as many filed as I possibly could that had viruses in them and downloaded them to their computer. I then smashed the monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and speakers. I did as much damage as I possibly could to everything but the CPU, hoping that the FBI would still be able to see all the things I had left there. I trashed the rest of the den, knocking over book cases, breaking the TV, but stealing the game consoles from there along with several cds and game discs. My crowbar aided me in breaking up the expensive leather sofa in the den. I tore off the wall paper and shattered the several vases I found over the fireplace. I filled the fireplace up with the rest of the sand that I had found in the shed. I was then on my way to my final destination, the room of the con artist herself. I walked inside and noticed the disgusting pink wallpaper, which became my first objective. I tore it all off and left it on the floor. Then I tore open her pillows and let the feathers fly. With little difficulty, I tore the hell out of her mattress. I ripped up her stuffed animals and the moved on to the items on her shelf. I tore the pages out of all of her picture books and smashed the tiny treasures I found there. I soon came across her backpack, which was filled with many different things for school, such as books that belonged to the school. I ripped them up and bent the covers. I broke off her shelves and left them to sit on the floor along with the huge mess of things. I ripped her backpack to shreds, and out of it fell her diary. I tore the pages out and ate them. Next to the bed I saw that there was a phone. A girl so young had no right to use a phone, especially a con artist like her, so I threw it across the room and it smashed to pieces. I grabbed a large number of pictures and other decorations off of the wall and broke them. I found some drawings made in art class by the con artist so I set them on fire. I pulled out her drawers and emptied them onto the floor, and tore up all of her clothes. In her closet I found a uniform that had several badges on it that read 'Girl Scouts of America.' I was smart enough to know that it was a really a uniform given to foot soldiers in an empire of con artists, so I ripped off the patches and badges and used them to pin the uniform to the shower curtain rod, and I made a flag to protest the actions of this evil empire. I found boxes of Barbie dolls and things like Barbie cars and houses in her closet. I took the dolls and put them in wild disgusting sexual positions, with Ken being the center of each one. I crashed the car into the wall a few times which did nothing, so I stomped on it to smash it. I disassembled the houses and threw the screws out the window. I left the Barbies there, but not before using a pair of scissors to give them all haircuts and remove a couple unneccesary arms and legs that were on them. It was time to make my escape, so I headed down the hallway for the room with the window I had used to make my entry. Before I could make it through, I heard the mother of the con artist call up the stairs to her brother, who unbeknownst to her was lying in the back yard, knocked out. She called up the stairs saying that her and her husband were headed to the homelss shelter to deliver the pizzas and that he was to watch the girls. I called back doing the best that I could to sound like a low-life worthless deadbeat teenage junkie, and was convincing enough to convince the mother of the con artist. I watched out the window as the car started up and pulled away. It was time for my final revenge. I got out the cell phone I had stolen and called 9-11 to say that a drunken madman had just taken off with a heroine addict prostitute and was a danger to himself and others. I gave them detailed directions on an appropriate place to ambush the car. I laughed maniacally at the damage I had caused. It was time. I grabbed my supplies and headed downstairs. The girl scouts sat in a circle, singing campfire songs. They screamed upon sight of me. They all got up and ran, except for the con artist, who stood frozen with fear. I tried to hit her with the crowbar but she dodged it and ran upstairs. I chased after her, and stood at the end of the hallway, watching her uncover all the damage I had done. She tried every door, seeing the damage that had been done to everything that she loved and cherished. The last door she opened was her room. She screamed in terror and began to cry. I I gave a loud laugh, but stopped suddenly when I heard a yelling from outside. I peered out the window to see that the girl scouts has found their friend in the basement and dragged her safely, along with the con artist's brother, to the front lawn. I now realized that there was only one way out of this. It was then that the twenty gallons of gasoline I had purchased would com ein handy. I ran from room to room, upstairs and downstairs, covering everything in gasoline. I even ventured outside and covered the toolshed and garage. I was sure to pick up the brother of the con artist's safe and throw it back inside where it would be eaten by the flames. I first lit the toolshed, then spread gasoline all over the backyard and lit it, ruining their lawn for good. Then I torched their minivan and lit the garage. Lastly, I ran upstairs to make a final check and make sure everything was soaked. I stopped dead in front of the con asrtist's room. There she was, escaping down a ladder. I looked outside and saw that all of her friends were hanging on the side of this ladder with her at the top, all climbing down trying to escape my grasp. Without a second thought, I whacked the con artist in the head with my crow bar, causing her to being to lost balance. Then, I pushed the ladder down. There was a symphony of loud screeches ending with a thud. All of them were knocked unconcious. I made a final, daring move and slipped downstairs to steal a pizza and found that the jar of change collected to build the con artist's empire was there. I then lit the final match, and the whole upstairs exploded in flames. I jumped from the top floor window and onto the lawn. I then flew the flag I had made in the con artist's front yard and set it on fire. I heard sirens in the distance and began to run for my car. But before I could get there, I heard an angry growling. I looked to see that the con artist's dog had returned home, still hungry. The dog dove for my neck and mauled me, but I was still able to escape. I got into my car and sped away. On the way home, I saw an intersection with two totaled cars, one of them was the con artist's father's car. The proud parents of the con artist stood with their hands on the side of a cop car. I slowed down to watch this spectacular scene. I heard that father telling the police officer that he was sure he had insurance papers in the drawer at home. Just then, a couple of firetrucks, police cars, and ambulances sped down the road towards the con artist's house. Now a nationwide search has been declared to find the one who did this, but all the evidence that could have pointed police in the right direction was destroyed in the fire. Looks like now somebody has learned a valuable lesson, to never, EVER be a con artist.
