What to do about a former employer giving bad refrences?

Okay, so, my first and only job I worked at was Dairy Queen for 6 months. I HATED every moment of it. It was not for me. And the manager was this awful, unprofessional person that constantly talked trash about her employees. I couldn't stand working there, so I quit. Well, today I had.an interview at Kohls that went GREAT. They said they would check with my former employer (DQ) and my personal references and get back to me. When they said this I instantly lost hope about getting the job because of Dairy Queen. I know that she will give a bad reference. What do I do? They are the only place I worked.for. so I have to list them if I want a chance to even be considered. How do I deal with this situation?

  1. All they are allowed to say by law is that you worked there. Nothing negative. Not even if u got fired or not. If they ask more than that they can get in serious trouble. So dont stress. And goodluck
  2. Then don't show those remarks to the new employer.
