Okay. This question has been asked many times, and never been given proper answers from people who are educated on these topics. I will give my 100% most truthful answer, from a Canadian perspective. I want to people to vote for the best American explanation. As I am Canadian. This is our side. It has much to do with History, Politics and World Relations. Before anyone yells "that's bias!" read the whole thing, and understand that bias is going to happen, when your on only one side. The second thing is, I am educated in both Canadian and American history. As both are closely related, and each of the events affects each other. The first topic is history. A lot of the Canadian dislike of American is in the blood of those who are descendants of the first Canadian settlers. The French were the first Europeans in Canada (aside from the Vikings). I am British and French Canadian. So my American distaste is in my blood. (I understand not all of you are bad, I have lots of American friends that I love dearly, and all my visits to the USA have been nothing but pleasant.) Anyway in the Seven Years War (you Americans will know it as the French and Indian War) 1756 - 1763, the French were in Canada in what was then called Acadia (New France). It was where our french province: Quebec, and our eastern coastal provinces are today. Anyway, it was all about Britain and France taking control of North America. Britain had the help of the 13 original colonies (now states) of the united states. Because France could not get reinforcements to Acadia in time, Britain and the Americans won. Britain would not have won without the help of the Americans. The French in our country know this, and are very proud of their history (even today many still want to separate from Canada much like how the Confederate States separated from the Union during the civil war.) The thing is they blame the Americans for being in the control of the now British Canada for so long. (Oh yeah we have independence from Britain but not really because we still have the Queen as are head of state, she's even on our coin.) (So that's the main reason why the French Canadians don't like you.) The Canadians of British decent however have any other reason. Many of their ancestors were United Empire Loyalists. The Tories that the Americans kicked out of the states and ruined their lives during the American Revolution / War of Independence. About 1 million people lived in the states during the revolution. One third of them were Loyalists who were forced to Immigrate to Canada. That was in the late 1700's. Think about how many kids they've had by now. I know at least 5 other families whose ancestors were loyalists. They blame you for having to put up with the french. The french blame you for putting up the British. Another thing, many Americans don't know this, but the Americans in the past have invaded Canada for a grand total of FIVE TIMES. If you don't believe me look it up on the internet. A great example is the War of 1812. The Americans came to the city of York (at the time it was our capital and is present day Toronto, but Ottawa is our capital now) and burned it down. The war was cause by the British not respecting the Americans as a country, but geography made the Canadians the monkey in the middle. We were not happy about that, so we and the British burned down the White House. (look up on the inter if you don't believe). This is a list of brief other things which make us mad: - even though our dollar is almost at par with yours we're still paying almost $5 more things than Americans (it adds up quick) - Americans own almost all the major companies in Canada it seems, so we're always catering to Americans' demands - people in other countries can't tell the difference between americans and Canadians unless they see our flag and we get treated like crap until they find out, afterwords they are overly apologetic - we're always hearing on the news that "the right to bare arms" has caused so many deaths from people killing family members and children finding their parent's guns in the night - we're very homo - friendly and multicultural so we don't like how some states don't have gay marriage and how many parts of the south are still very racist - we're are concerned for Americans' well being due to their lack of health care (we hear about how people do into extreme debt if they get injured in a car accident) - we don't like how we know so much about the USA and it's history while many Americans do not know of our history or how we live (many southern Americans think we live in Igloos and get to work on sled dogs as well as think we have states, we actually live just like you, have four seasons, and have province and territories instead of states) - even little things like no matter how many times we change the default language to Canadian English in Microsoft Word, whenever we look at it again it went back to American English. Canadian: Favourite, Honour, Colour. American: Favourite, Honor, Color. We pronounce the letter Z "zed" like the rest of the english speaking world, while you pronounce it "zee" - The other thing is that many American adults seem to think that Canadians are all stupid or something. Like we were born dumb, deaf and blind. We are just as educated as all of you. - The last thing is that is seems as if the Americans are taking all the credit for everything we did in WW2. You guys came in half way through the war, only because of Pearl Harbor while we were there from day one and sent our troops over to help our mother countries without being attacked or a second thought. Yes your participation helped us greatly in the end and the weapons you supplied us with in the begining, but it was us that fought, died, and triumphed in Ypres and Passchendaele for France, and us that fought, died, and triumphed over the wate REMEMBER I'M LOOKING FOR THE BEST AMERICAN ANSWER! SO WHY YOU GUYS DON"T LIKE US! I ANSWERED THE CANADIAN SIDE! YOUR TURN AMERICANS! I WANT TO HEAR YOUR SIDE OF THE STORY!
