Which novel should I choose to read for my Humanities class?

I'm a senior in high school, and I've been given the assignment to read a classic English novel and write a critical essay on it. I have a list of books from which I can choose, but since it's a rather long list, I'm not going to list them all here unless necessary. But if you think of "the classics", the books that come to your mind are probably what's on that list. So my question is, what book do I choose? I would like something not too long that is also interesting and will hopefully keep me on my toes. If this helps, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are two of my favorite modern book series, but the classic novel doesn't have to be like them. And yes, I mean English as in from England lol

  1. animal farm is a pretty interesting book. its a satire for communist russia (but with farm animals) its really interesting and would be very easy to write something on. Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are also favorites of mine, but i dont think a book like those would cut it.
  2. English? Like an English Author? Hmmm.. and it has to be a novel. What about Jonathan Swift's Guilliver's Travels...or was he Irish. Voltaire's Candid is good but he is French. Oh I know, this is perfect, what about Douglas Adam's A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy! That was an awesome book. You will love it. I read it in a few days. Easy read and interesting.
  3. Anything by Charles Dickens, one of the best, if not the best, English writer. If you're looking for a relatively short one, try Oliver Twist (that would be a good one to write an essay on) or Great Expectations.
