Do I need to include this in my job application?

Ok, so I am applying for a job. I picked up an Information Package for it which is 4 pages, in that 4 pages it stated the 'Essential Criteria,' 'Personal Requirements,' 'Behaviors Require,' Tasks & Duties etc....' At the end on the last page, it has a Name, Date & Sign section that says by doing so I understand all the stated. What my question is, since this is all listed & I have signed saying I possess these qualities, do I still have to respond to all of these factors in my Cover Letter, because if I do, it is gonna be too big & unattractive to an Employer to read. Is this the reason I have been given this booklet to sign so I only have to speak about myself & my history in the Cover Letter?

  1. It is always best to keep your cover letter fairly short. You should briefly state why you would be an asset to the company, but be concise. If you make it too long, the employer won't pay attention to it. If they call you in for an interview, that will be the time to elaborate.
  2. Your cover letter should personalize your resume. It should summarize your skills/qualities listed in your resume that apply to the job requirements... in effect, it is a marketing document where you are selling yourself to the employer.
  3. Hi Lucas, I would recommend that you pick a few key requirements from the 'essential criteria' section and discuss how your skills and experience meet them. I would also look for the opportunity to combine some of the requirements throughout the document and answer them together, often job descriptions have a fair bit of double-up. Don't try to cover too much in your cover letter, I would recommend about 4-5 paragraphs in the body of your letter. The whole document should fit onto one page (ideally). You may want to look for opportunities in your resume to highlight points in your experience that answer some of the other important criteria, it's a good way to answer a fair few requirements without a long cover letter.
