Seniors, would it be wise to taste a pet's food or treats to see why they aren't eating them?
A customer brought back a package of peanut butter dog treats today. She told the clerks at the return desk that her doggie loves peanut butter and she was sure he would like those treats but he didn't want to eat them. She took one from the package and put it on her tongue to taste it, and said they had no flavor. I looked at the ingredient list and it seemed that there was nothing harmful in them. Would you do such a thing or is that just disgusting?

- That's disgusting. It's made from peanut butter but not for humans. And, if the dog won't eat it, he probably doesn't like it or there's something wrong. Why would she taste something that could possibly have something wrong??
- I see nothing disgusting about it. I've tried Spike's milk bones.
- Not a good idea really. They are formulated for animals, they might not poison you, but some of the ingredients could make you poorly. Incidentally, I once tried to retrieve food from Pippa, my fat black cuddly cat... the wounds soon healed.
- I see nothing wrong in sampling a dog treat but not from an opened bag that a customer brought back. You wouldn't know if it tasted bad, unless you sampled it. I don't have a dog, but if I did, I'd want to know why it wasn't being eaten. Like the lady who returned the dog treats, I'd hold it on my tongue for a minute to see how it tasted. Years ago, my neighbor's young sons, ate some Milk Bone treats out of the cupboard, to see how they tasted. Their mom found out later. They each ate two, & they were just fine after wards. Their mom got a good laugh out of it & wondered why they passed up the freshly baked cookies, for Milk Bones. The youngest son, said he "yiked 'em."
- Very Bad Idea..! There's a huge difference between a dog's digestive system and ours. Dog's anthropological History includes both being Hunters and Scavengers and, in order not to die of food poisoning, they evolved a digestive system which produces about 10 times more digestive fluid and acids than Humans do. Dogs can eat things which would kill a Human. And they barely taste food too. If it smells O.K. they eat it, is all.
- Just read the ingredient label. Animal by products means the animal's lungs, stomach intestines, spleen etc.
- Patti - I would say if the poor dog won't eat it - throw it out and buy some other label. Yuck! No - I wouldn't test it. Doggy all ready did that. People are funny. I agree with gee bee. DeeJay.
