On this day in 1970, Janis Joplin died a tragic death..?

//Band of the day: Grobschnitt. Song of the day: Symphony. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI7R6gN22q0 \\ If you care, I'll do this more often. Respond if you listened/liked this song.. and whether or not I should skip this part of my question(s). Well, ya' know, I know nothing about this person, but I see she's highly respected among you guys, so I chose her to be the basis for this question. + Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) was an American singer, songwriter, painter, dancer and music arranger. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a solo artist with her backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. At the height of her career she was known as The Queen of Rock and Roll as well as The Queen of Psychedelic Soul. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004, and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. + MQ: Favorite Janis Joplin tracks? MQ2: Favorite Janis Joplin albums? MQ3: Favorite group Janis Joplin was involved with? BQ: How does Janis Joplin rank among your favorite female vocalists? BQ2: Let's say National Geographic had video footage of a rainbow-polka-dotted zebra being chased by a Christmas-colored lion, and then the both of them being shot down by an extraterrestrial creature using his eyes as lasers. How would you respond to this? BQ3: How do you propose we should stop the bullying problem involving sheep? BQ4: Do you care for what happens in politics? I, for one, don't give a f*ck, unless it directly concerns me or my welfare. BQ5: How much sheep could a sheepchuck chuck if a sheepchuck could exist?

  1. MQ: Anything she did while still with Big Brother & the Holding Co., especially "I Need a Man to Love", "Down On Me" "Combination of the 2" and "Ball and Chain", but she never recorded a bad song with them... She should never have left that band for "stardom", it might even have cost her her life, in some ways. MQ: Has to be "Cheap Thrills". "Big Brother and the Holding Co. Live at Winterland 1968" is a great listen, their debut album is rough but good. "Kozmic Blues" comes next, followed by "Pearl", both of which are spotty and a little too "slick" band-wise. MQ Big Brother, all the way. They continued on without her, and although nobody bought their later albums, they are excellent albums in their own right. BQ: She's in my top-30. Her body of work is a little small compared to my other favorites. Her best songs compete with anyone's. BQ2: My eyes started to glaze over with "National Geographic" and finished glazing over by "rainbow-polka-dotted", sorry.

  4. I haven't heard any Grobschnitt for a year or two, so that was great to hear. Symphonic prog with plenty of humor. I'm not that familiar with the great Janis Joplin, I only have her greatest hits, but I love watching her live performances, like in the Festival Express movie. MQ: Summertime, Get it While You Can, Cry Baby, Down on Me MQ2&3: I think Big Brother and the Holding Company for both Q's, but I don't really have sufficient knowledge of all her albums and bands. BQ: I do really like her voice and the power with which she delivers, but for me she comes in at least third after Kate Bush and Djong Yun of Popol Vuh. BQ2: I'd check if my morning cup of LSD was laced with caffeine or something. BQ3: We gotta teach them to stand up for themselves, maybe some Jiu-Jitsu lessons. BQ4: I care theoretically, but I don't do anything about it. Last time I voted I think was also the first time I voted, about 9 years ago. Bq5: Sheep sell cheap cells by the sheet store.

LOL BQ4 - Yes I do but it doesn't really matter if a Democrat or Republican wins - we are still screwed either way. BQ5 - I want some of what you are smoking. LOL
  6. MQ: Her version of "Little Girl Blue" is definitely my favorite, but I also love "Down On Me", "Summertime", "Ball and Chain", "Piece of My Heart, etc. MQ2: Perhaps "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!", largely on the strength of "Little Girl Blue". MQ3: Big Brother and the Holding Company. BQ: One of the best, clearly. BQ2: I would respond to this by having all the food and beverages I've consumed within the past 48 hours or so examined for tampering. I would do this quickly and without delay. BQ3: I've never bullied nor been bullied by sheep. I did however have a vivid nightmare as a little boy involving being chased by deer. Only these deer were not slender and graceful, but morbidly obese and angry. Oh, and green slime would repeatedly form on my face as I ran from them. It was unpleasant. People say nightmares are a reaction to something experienced in real life - I can't even begin to fathom how that would apply in this case. BQ4: Yes because it's important and unquestionably does concern all of us and all of our welfare, no because I've long since come to understand I'm just a cog in the machinery. Consequently how I feel about this, that, or the other thing changes diddly f'ing squat in the bigger scheme of things. BQ5: Although I've spent countless hours tirelessly striving to resolve that mystery, the results have been inconclusive up to this point.
  7. That was a great piece of music in my books and new to me. Yes keep it up, you should always find sone one willing to learn. MQ: I love all of her music, and I see you have a good few links already so I won't add any this time. MQ2: Cheap Thrills is still my fav. MQ3: Big Brother And The Holding Company, though the Full Tilt Boogie Band was not bad either. BQ: top 5 BQ2: Oh, my God! The Christians are at it again. BQ3: Hire a wolf BQ4: not really, BQ5: it should chucksheep upchuck to unchuck to be a sheepchuck. take care dave
