How does Facebook decide what friends to show in the "Friends on Chat" section?

On the left side of the screen there are pictures of 20 friends labeled "Friends on Chat." However, not all of them are actually on chat and in the main chat area it says more than 20 friends actually are online right now. How does Facebook decide who goes on the left side of the screen? At first I thought that it was the people I interact with the most, except there are some people listed there who are not online and I have not talked to in months. That makes no sense.

  1. i think its just random people every time, just like on the left side of your profile where it lists your friends. i noticed this too hope this helps! God bless XD
  2. According to Facebook, it is randomly populated. Priority is given to people who have interacted often (comments, wall posts). Sending personal messages and simply visiting one profile is not counted.
