Why would my new 14mo old dog start peeing and pooping ON TOP of his crate?

OK, so I got my dog and have left his crate open for him to go in and out of in the pantry while I'm at work. All was fine for the first few weeks and now even after we have gone out for his "business" he has peed once and the other time pooped when I was only gone for a short time. I hate to crate him but now feel I need too. Thoughts?
