Is it illegal to just pick names out of yellowpages?

I need some names to send stuff by snail mail. Is it illegal to just send stuff to a random address or do you have to pay for a mailing list for it to be legal? Thanks [I've heard its legal as long as it's just paper with stuff on it, no actual objects, etc.]
