My mom co-signed for my car. Do I have to have the same insurance company?
My mom co-signed for my car and they automatically set up my insurance policy with the same company she's with, with both of us listed as an insured driver. Is this a requirement or can I change insurance companies?

- You can change insurance companies. The loan contract probably specifies a certain amount of coverage you must have, and it will specify that you must notify them of any change in coverage.
- You can change if you like. The contract probably only requires that you have a certain level of insurance, not specifically that company. The dealership or bank probably just did that for simplicity's sake on their part.
- I believe you can change companies but it isn't necessarily the right thing to do. If you already have family in the same company, you get a discount on your payments. This may not be the same for all companies but I know some do.
- No...but you'll have to have the same coverages, especially collision, with another company if you go that way.
