My mom co-signed for my car. Do I have to have the same insurance company?

My mom co-signed for my car and they automatically set up my insurance policy with the same company she's with, with both of us listed as an insured driver. Is this a requirement or can I change insurance companies?

  1. You can change insurance companies. The loan contract probably specifies a certain amount of coverage you must have, and it will specify that you must notify them of any change in coverage.
  2. You can change if you like. The contract probably only requires that you have a certain level of insurance, not specifically that company. The dealership or bank probably just did that for simplicity's sake on their part.
  3. I believe you can change companies but it isn't necessarily the right thing to do. If you already have family in the same company, you get a discount on your payments. This may not be the same for all companies but I know some do.
  4. No...but you'll have to have the same coverages, especially collision, with another company if you go that way.
