Wait or Quit or ask for raise? What should I do?
I have worked at this same place(office admin. work) for the last 5 yrs. There is not much I can do to take more responsibility at this place. Very small off. I guess you can say I have the lowest position in the whole office. I am sure all the other position get something or commisision. My position will be the easiest to fill if I was to leave. This is how I have been paid in the last 5 yrs. Year 1 - at the end of 1st yr get a bonus Year 2 – beg. Of yr get a raise + bonus at the end of year Year 3 – beg. Of yr get a raise + no bonus at the end of yr Year 4 – beg. Of yr get a raise + bigger bonus at the end of yr Year 5 – no raise + not sure of bonus yet. I get vacation, sick days, and no benefits. In yr 3 one of my bosses felt bad and gave me a few hundered $ chk without anyone, or other boses knowing. Then another time him and his wife got me a nice gift. I really need a job that has benefits as I have a young family, so dental, glasses need to be covered. This job is very easy and convienient for me. Usually they are very flexible when it comes to dr. appts or I need to leave for my child;s school. I really don’t know if I should ask for a raise, or look for another job? My hubby and I have been trying to have our second child for the last 11 months. I really wanted to get preg and then I can go on maternity leave and take my time to look for something better. Just really confused as to what shuld I do? Am I coming across as not confident in myself if I don’t ask or question raise? I just don’t know what I would say if they ask what have you done for our company? Am I being taken advantage of? How would an employer look at his employee in this situation? I will go on waiting list for surgery to help my conception this month. How long shuld I wait and keep trying? Part of me wants to just get another job and then part of me wishes I will get preg. Soon.

- unwise to quit job in this economy unless you have another to step into. Look around first. Sounds like the company's good to you
- Sounds like a good job, even if you're at the bottom. Why not ask if you can move into one of the other positions? You'd be around to help train your replacement and you probably know how things work for the others in your office. Not sure if the boss could promise you anything in writing, but you'd have an idea of what to do next. Might also be a good time to discuss maternity leave, make sure you have a job waiting for you when you come back. If you found another job (before you quit), that job may not be as friendly for you as this one. Comment: If you want another child, you have to expect to work at a job that will let you take time off when you need to. A better-paying job may require more of your time. This is a good time to balance the advantages of a less-responsible but worse-paying job with the smaller time commitments of the current job. Until you need less time with the child(ren), you might be better off with the current job you have, even if you don't get commission or you know you're at the bottom of the office totem pole. ... Hope you find what you're looking for. Good luck!
