How do I make the contacts on my Android HTC Vivid show up in my Gmail contacts list?

I have an HTC Vivid, and I have logged in with my Gmail account. I expected all contacts to sync with my Gmail automatically, but that didn't happen. How do I add a contact in my phone contacts and make it sync with my Gmail, and how do I sync my current contacts from my phone to Gmail and vice versa? If it motivates you, best answer gets 10 points?

1. From contacts->Import/Export-> Export to SD. Then delete all contacts. Then contacts->Import/Export->Import from SD. When it asks whether to save on "Phone" , "SIM", or "Google account", choose Google Account. After all contacts are loaded, give it some time to sync. Also make sure that whenever you create a new contact, choose Google Account and not the phone or the sim.
