Is there anything I need to know before selling my software on the internet?

I am thinking about starting a small business on the web to sell programs that I have made, but I realized that there may be things I am not accounting for, like taxes. I am only selling them for about $5-$10, so I do not want to go through more trouble than it's worth. If I just charge people through PayPal, is there anything else I should know before I can start selling... e.g. taxing, registering business somewhere, other legal issues... or am I exempt from all that since I'm running it myself and it is online-only? If anyone knows this off the top of his/her head, I would appreciate it rather than reading through complicated information at, say sba.com. Thanks.

  1. Try using a vendor site. Yahoo! has one or, you could just use eBay. My advice, open source them and put them on sourceforge.net you won't get any money, but it's the right thing to do.
  2. I know that businesses that sell through ebay must charge sales tax when selling to someone within their own state. I would contact your state government to see hor your state handles this situation.
