how does a student with no tax-id number ask for donations from businesses?

I am leaving to NY for a month and need a laptop to edit with. This laptop will also come in handy when I come back because I will have to make about 2 films for college portfolios. The only cards I have to play so far are my 4.1 gpa, im poor, and im going to NYU for a month. I know that the lap top I need is a lot of money (mac book pro: 2500) and even now my chances are slim, but if theres any chance that I may have of getting donations, please tell me. The mac book pro is most compatible with the program final cut pro, which is what I will be using.

1. It will be quite difficult for someone to donate a product worth $2500 to someone they do not know. I would suggest that you barter your skill/service for it. If you are very proficient with Final Cut Pro, then maybe you can give lessons or do a project for a company/person for the laptop. This way, they can at least write off the laptop as an expense and 1099 you or something. Good Luck with this.
