1. www.rootsweb.com offers a huge collection of email lists, both surname and locality based. At the moment, there seems to be some "server shifting" going on, related to gen web sites. I have no idea if this involves the email lists as well.
2. http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Poke around - besides the ones for surnames and specific counties, there are regional ones that cover several adjoining counties. Don't sign up for a dozen right off the bat, unless you want a flood. Make sure your spam trap knows Roots Web is one you want to hear from, too.
3. Thanks for this question .. it helped me reconnect with a valuable resource I'd drifted from over time in my research. One of my favorite resources for locating mailing lists specific to genealogy is an excellent one: Cyndi's List under the section indicated for mailing lists: {http://www.cyndislist.com/mailing.htm} This site is worth checking out frequently..even for experienced genealogist. It covers mailing lists, newsgroups, and other key online resources.
