I am thinking about filing the long form. How and where can I find a list of tax deductible expenses?
I am mainly inquiring about home building expenses, but I heard that you can also deduct groceries and clothing and all kinds of other personal expenses if you are not taking the standard deduction.

- You heard wrong. As a generalization, if you are not buying a house, you will not use the long form.
- Go to irs.gov and read all about it.
- Um, you can not deduct those items, unfortunately... Here is what you CAN deduct... The following topics are found in the category of Itemized Deductions. Each topic is followed by a corresponding number. To access your topic, select the three–digit number. Should I Itemize? - You heard incorrectly. NONE of the items you have mentioned are deductible expenses. Get yourself a copy of Schedule A and the accompanying instructions for a summary list of the types of expenses which you can use for personal income tax deductions.
- You can find the deduction info in the instructions for form 1040 schedule A. Not to stick a pin in your balloon, but what you've heard isn't even close to right.
