Latest Lists

Before releasing published books into the market, there is a list that authors get there book listed on?

new releases. I think there is a book review listed as well. What is the name of the group/list?

  1. If you are in the UK or Europe the list is called British Books in Print and this is normally done when you get your ISBN. Your publisher (or you if you are self publishing) is supposed to lodge 6 copies of the book with various libraries. If you do a web search you will get more info on this. Something similar for the US exists but I don;t know the name off hand...
  2. New release list. Fact - there are something like 30000 new books published - per month. There is no comprehensive list of them for the general public. There is no comprehensive list, periond, just a lot of buyers who look at a lot of stuff. That's at the wholesale level. those lists are then broken down by the publisher and wholesaler. The publisher says "I want to puch these new releases" the Wholesaler looks them over and says "I'll take these, the other's I'm not interested in". Also, every wholesaler and publisher puts out a cataolgue of New release, one for Paper and one for Hardcover. these go to the book stores. There are a number of ways to get into these. 1. Your publisher buys ad space. 2. You publisher submits it 3. You have a friend who recommends the book at the wholesaler level. (I did this for a number of friends books) 4. you get some kind of really impressive, amazing device to get the publication editors opinion, dig through the internet and luckily stumble on the name of that person and they decide to put you in. I've seen this tried, but I've never seen it work.) 5. A bookseller recommends it. Yes, the guy who runs your locak bookstore. Independants are easier to get recommends from and all the Independant Booksellers associations do their own new release recommend lists. This is what you want to do. Go into a couple of local small bookstores and ask them if they belong to the ABA or their loval regional organization, give them a copy of your book and ask them to recommend it. Don't be coy, but take no for an answer graciously. As an auther the independant bookseller is either your greatest friend or worst enemy. You get to set the tone of that relationship. Make sure your always REALLY NICE to them.
  3. Try to buy Writer's Market. It has all information.
