Any books currently banned in the US?

i know some books like Ulysses, E for Ecstasy, Catcher in the Rye, have been banned in certain places but not all over the US. so i wanted to know if there is a list of currently banned books, or is there not such list? Banned as in anyone in the US would get in legal trouble for owning them, not just banned in specific places(schools, libraries) due to certain content.

  1. I haven't heard of anything banned in the US. Everything gets a listing in the Library of Congress, even if it is banned in certain schools.
  2. No. The only material that would be absolutely banned in the US, and this is still regulated on a state-by-state, not national basis (unless it involves interstate transfer of the items) would be certain types of pornography, expecially child pornography. There are no works of literature that are illegal to own/posess in the US, and I believe bans in schools etc. simply means they are not allowed in, and have no criminal penalty attached for violating them.
  3. Absolutely NONE> NO book has ever been completely banned in the United States and never will. Certain communities - particularly in the Bible Belt ban books from their libraries and from their schools but it is not illegal to own these books and ever will be. This whole banned book thing has gotten out of hand. No, you may go to Barnes and Noble and buy Ulysses, Lolita (I bought a new copy only this week) The Story of O, 20 Days of Sodom of or any obok you wish. Nobody will come knocking on our door like the thought polite and take it from you. There are just schools where is may not be taught or libraries where it may be checked out. Unfortunately young Americans have their priorities all messed up. You worry about non-existent banned books and think nothing about students getting tazered while trying to ask John Kerry a question or about the nearly 4000 dead and 10 000 wounded n Iraq and Afghanistan. If anything should gaul you - that should. If you want an issue - that is your issue because it is your generation losing their lives over there. If your library doesn't choose to carry Ulysses, screw them. Buy it on Amazon and read it anyway if you want to. Save your anger for what really matters - an unjust war being fought in the Middle East that is costing the lives of our children ever single day. Right now, that is far more important than owning a copy of Ulysses - which most people can't manage to get through anyway. Pax- C
  4. lol, I don't detect even the slightest bit of anger in this question. Apparently this women must know you, because she's all about attacking what you are/aren't concerned about, all based off of this one question you've asked.
  5. Whenever I hear a group has "banned" a book, I run right out and buy it because anything worth banning is automatically worth my time. I'm somewhat thankful to those active book-banners, because I would not have read the book without their anti-recommendation. I have a whole shelf of them, organized in the "banned" section of my shelves.
  6. THE ONLY BOOKS THAT WOULD BE BANNED IN THE US ARE PORN (AS STATED ABOVE) & A TREASONOUS BOOK THAT SOLD MILITARY SECRETS THE AUTHOR WOULD ALSO GET LOCKED UP
  7. http://www.forbiddenlibrary.com hope this helps.
  8. Funny you should ask that. We just had a lecture on it at the free library here in Philadelphia. Perhaps if you went to their website they would have some information for you.
