What books have been banned in the United States?
Hello! I would like to get started on reading books that have been banned in the US. Could anyone give me a good list (or website that gives a list) of books that have been banned in this country? I know there will be no fully comprehensive list, but I'm looking for a nice, long one if possible! Time period, genre, intended audience age, etc. do not matter. Any and all banned books are fair game. Thanks!

- Read the books that were written by Joel Chandler Harris, they're out there but the schools and public libraries won't stock them anymore since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.

- The glorious, ineluctable right is forever banning. Banning not just books but other activities. Somewhere along the line the spiritually driven, especially fervent Christian Conservatives, made some sort of confusion between pleasure and wickedness. If you are having fun, you are probably doing something wrong, something that is, or should be, banned. Laughter itself was in the Puritan cross hairs, you know. Levity was actively discouraged by our Plymouth Rock predecessors At times they have banned other religious confessions, singing, dancing, holding hands in public, drama, films, many thousands of books, certain kinds of clothing (sumptuary laws in England, or dresses that revealed the ankle in Boston), strong drink (Prohibition gave us organized crime), marijuana (which gave us organized crime), abortion, speaking against war (during the war of 1815 and the First World War), bikini bathing suits, using the wrong fountain to get a drink of water, eating meat on Friday, and consorting with the devil among many others. Yes, well the consorting with the Devil thing isn't so bad; I've nearly given it up entirely. But you can see that banning nearly anything is done because people enjoy it and want to do. For this very simple reason, banning has a very poor record. Anything that is banned by the Conservatives will, you may be sure, enjoy wide popularity and general indulgence at some time in the near future. Serious students of history know that Conservatives are nearly always proven wrong in the unfolding of time. As their zeal for banning this or that slides away, their antediluvian mindset is revealed in all its irrelevant splendor. For a book to be banned invariably indicates that it is a quality read and and a valuable piece of literature, and it will find its place in the library of the intelligent population. No stronger stamp of approval exists. I congratualte you on your undertaking.
