Why was Harry Potter on the banned/censored list?

How many times has this book been challenged? What has been the writers experience with censorship? Is there a website where i can get this information?

  1. he started smoking at the office in Manhattan
  2. Some people try to ban Harry Potter because they think it promotes witchcraft. I don't know how many times they have been sucessfull. There is this one lady named Laura Mallory who has tried banning them at least half a dozen times.
  3. because some rediculous religious fanatics took a purely fantasy book as a blow to christianity.
  4. Because of witchcraft.
  5. Some crazily-religious Christians believe it promotes evil witchcraft, because Harry does magic. I guess they completely overlook the fact that he's always battling evil with magic. Not doing evil.
  6. The Harry Potter series has been challenged/put on different censored lists/banned from shelves in libraries and schools several hundred if not literally thousands of times since the very first book in the series first came out in the UK. The movement started in the UK and we have felt the spread into the US of course given the far reach of fanatical Christians arguing that the "withcraft" and "wizards" and "magic" and "demons" and --etc--is counterproductive and, in fact, downright WRONG, in relation to what "the Bible" teaches, or the basic fundamentals of Christianity. Their ignorance on the topic of the fantasy genre of fiction is staggering, nevermind their closed minds. We are seeing the same issue over the movie "The Golden Compass," and there have been several others, of course. It never ends. Here's a website that talks more about it as it relates to Harry Potter: http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin/admin157.shtml Alex
  7. Its been challenged pretty much since its come out and that counts for all of the books. Its censored because some overly fundamental Christians believe it promotes evil and witchcraft when clearly it does not, especially since the author is a Christian and the story is of good v. evil. I wrote a paper on J.K.R. and why they should not be censored. My source is a great site to look into Harry Potter and tons of other fantastic books that get challenged.
