I need help with selecting what I need in a laptop?

My parents are helping me out with purchasing a laptop. I like the Dell brand. But, I'm almost 30 and still pretty new at computer stuff. I don't know what I want/need with regards to speed, and size of the memory space. I don't even know how they are measured! I do know I want the laptop to be reasonably fast, although it doesn't have to be the top speed. I will be using it for mainly fun purposes...not for work, not for school (although I do take classes here or there.) I visit YouTube a lot, play some online games, and just surf news sites. Can anyone guide me into what I can look for? Or "dumb down" some of the things I need to consider?

1. well, laptops these days all have vista, in my own opinion i recommend getting a laptop with 3GB of ram atlease, therefore vista can run at a peek performance without causing lag. another thing to look for is what type of cpu it has? amd intel? dual core etc. if your gaming check what types of graphics card is integrated with your laptop. i highly do not recommend any mobile graphics cards. like intel integrated mobile graphics, trying to find one that is atlease made by nvidia or ati
