Why do I keep receiving offline messages from chatters I don't know?

For some reason, everytime I sign on to Yahoo Messenger, I have a whole bunch of offline messages waiting for me from people (Asian women, mostly) I'd never chatted with before. Most of them seem to think I'm online at the time and that I'm ignoring them since I don't reply. For example, I'll get a string of message like this: Judy_Filipina: Hiiiiiiiii!!! Judy_Filipina: asl Judy_Filipina: pls chat with me Judy_Filipina: u there? I can only think of three possible reasons for this. #1 - The people I've been chatting with are in public cafes and leave screen name up for the next person. #2 The people I've chatted with have shared my screen name with others or have put me on some sort of massive mailing list. #3 - Some kind of computer glitch with YM that keeps me signed in even when I sign out. My friend Cherry seems to think I'm online and ignoring her from time to time. What gives?

  1. It's spam, everyone gets these on yahoo i.m.
  2. it's not a glitch, it's a feature... you got spam
  3. Because the time they send you a message or a chat message you are not online so you are always recieving an offline message!
  4. It's very possible that someone has somehow gotten ahold of your Yahoo ID, especially if people are forwarding around an email and your name gets attached to it, and it keeps going around...that wouldn't explain you being online and "ignoring" your friend Cherry, however. I would suggest changing your password for everything Yahoo related immediately, if you haven't done so already. It may not cut down on spam messages, but you can rest assured that nobody has access to your account.
  5. probably a spam from somebody who knows your email address. take a look at http://my.friendswinonline.info. This amazing site has a video dating, video conferencing, video resume, etc. check it out!
  6. If you are getting this spam on your offlines when you log in. Make your offlines available to messenger contacts only, I had this problem a long time ago, I did this and it all stopped, I know just how annoying it can be.
  7. You can resolve this by setting your privacy preferences to ignore everyone who is NOT on your friend's list. Here's how: At the top of Messenger: Click on: Messenger Click on: Preferences Click on: General Click on: Ignore list Mark: Ignore everyone who is not on my Friend's list Click on: Apply Click on: OK You can also report the spammers to Yahoo through one of the forms below: Here is a link to a Yahoo Messenger Beta 9 Help form: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger9/help9.html?from_url=http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071210093850AAFTWtd&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMiDNWUIxS0YuiD2BSkV8ulPr_aCkz9PcqVg--&paid=answered#EqJYHmv7CXbf69ah2y1z Here is a link to a Yahoo Messenger 8 Help form: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger8/help8.html?from_url=http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/contactus/contactus-01.html: Here is a link to a Yahoo Messenger for Mac Help form: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/mac/general_mac.html Make sure to go into a lot of detail when describing your problem or asking your question. VISTA USERS: I have not found a link to a Yahoo Messenger Vista Help form yet. Pick one of the forms above to fill out and send in.
