In Johanna Lindsey's Joining, how are the people related to Defy Not the Heart?

I was just reading about Johanna Lindsey and I noticed that it lists Joining as a sequel to Defy Not the Heart, of which I had no idea. Sadly I'm abroad right now and can't get a copy of the book here, but can anyone tell me who the two characters in Joining are in relation to those in Defy Not the Heart? I can find the names of them but not who they are in relation to the first book and I'm just curious. Also, it's been a couple years since I read Defy Not the Heart so please remind of anyone who isn't Ranulf and Reina if it has to do with one of them. Thanks!

1. The two main characters are Milicant Crispin and Wulfric de Thorpe (betrothed to Milicant when he was 13 and she just 6). However, Milicant wants to marry Roland Fitz Hugh of Clydon who is the son of Lord Ranulf (the hero from Defy Not the Heart). This book is not nearly as good at Defy Not the Heart.
