I am taking a trip on route 66 for the first time what are the top sites to see and the most historic sites?

I need a detailed list for all sites to see on route 66 I am starting in chicago and going all the way this is my first trip and I would love to see as much as i can I am planning a three week trip is this long enough?

1. Plan to stay a few days in Amarillo, Texas. Route 66 goes right through town. There is the Cadillac Ranch, also there is a Steak joint there with a 70 ounce steak, and if you eat it all, it is free. What I would suggest though, is to get a map, and find out all the big towns that 66 run through, go to the library and read up on the states, cities, and towns you will be visiting, and write down the info on the things you don't want to miss.........Have lots of fun! I am going to do that trip one day!
