can you ask for a refund for a purchase made in person via Craig's List?
I bought a dvd player which doesn't work from an ad on Craig's List. I don't have a receipt, and paid cash for it. Is there any way to get a refund from this random guy? My friend said i have the burden of proof.

- You can ask. Send an email or call the number that you originally contacted the seller from. If he's a decent person, he'll take back his player. If not... caveat emptor. Buyer beware. You own a piece of junk.
- Dan is right. There is no guarantee or warranty from Craigslist or an individual seller for the items you buy. Try contacting the seller to see if they will refund your money. It's not necessarily about a "burden of proof" per se, but the seller could easily claim that the item worked when he sold it to you. Then it would be your word against his. You may also be able to contact the manufacturer -- not to claim that you bought a bad product on Craigslist, but to see if the dvd player is under warranty through the manufacturer or if they will repair their product. (My husband bought a plasma tv from an individual seller on eBay. We could not get it to work. The seller refused to refund our money and was actually quite rude. We contacted the manufacturer who (for free) replaced the cords, bolts and remote controls.) Craigslist is better than eBay in that, dealing locally, you could (and apparently, should have, in your instance) test your product to make sure that it works before making the purchase.
