How do medicaid wait lists work at nursing homes?

While shopping for a nursing home, I am told each home has a waitlist of 2.5 years and that new residents need to private pay. I'm curious...once you are in there, do you think some nursing homes freely move people up and down the waitlist based on the type of care they need, if they like the family, etc? No one is going to show you the waitlist due to privacy, so one never knows where the truth lies.

  1. a waitlist usually means when a resident dies or leaves the facility a new resident that's on the list can come to the home. sure most nursing homes would rather have private pay than medicaid. because medicaid only pays so much. i think they do as they want. i used too work in nursing home. it's all about the money. not the individual needs.(most of the time)
