Where can I find a phlebotomist's list of tests ordered and their respective collection routines?

Specifically, any test that could be ordered and the test tube or means of collection required for that test. I am going to start a new job in a week and this time I won't have a supervisor to ask any questions to unless it's by cell and it will be night shift so I really would appreciate any helpful information for this. It would definitely help my confidence~ Please and thank you I have been looking online sheesh.... And I meant specific tests beyond hematology I mean the actual test not just the field specific...

  1. you can search online for the different kinds of tests ordered, good luck. Or if you could get a lab slip from somewhere, you can research their routines.
  2. This is how I remembered it: Anything going to Chemistry or Toxicology-Red or Green Anything going to Hematology-Lavender Anything going to Co-ag.-Blue Anything going to Blood Bank-Red Weird ones: lactic acid-grey top on ice, genetic tests usually SST, lead-lavender Sounds like you'll just be doing the "usual" tests though, & nothing too weird. I hope that helps.
  3. NO FEAR! Every single Lab Company the clinic uses, (Quest, CDL, Biometric---what ever) has a corresponding lab req. (lab slip) which you fill out per the ordered tests. Each test has the tube requirements on it! (Blood sugar= gray...etc.) And the back side of the slip has all of the test also) I kept one stuck right up on the cabinet above the counter I used. Each lab the clinic uses has a manual also, and if the Dr. orders a test not listed on the lab slip, it will be in the Lab ref manual, or call the lab...great help! Find the name of someone -a contact at the lab, who you can be familiar with, and call often...they are there to help you! I had Helen!! FANTASTIC! I knew I could call the lab and ask her anything. Good luck, its hard I know...but even Dr.s use that manual, and call the lab!
