Can someone make a list of daily fruits/vegetables for my guinea pig?

I feed him a little lettuce and a baby carrot every day. But I don't feel I'm feeding him enough, aside from his usual pellet food. I'm also still new to the whole 'owning a guinea pig' thing. I've only had him for about two months. So I was wondering if someone could give me a portioned list of food/vegetables I could give him daily. Several lists would be appreciated. And please no websites, I'd like to see the information here.

  1. One thing is that I would recommend cutting out the lettuce, most varieties are toxic to them. here is a good list. small slit of apple( when he is big use a slice) Slice of Banana (High in potassium) 1 Baby carrot (just good for them) And this is not fruit or veggie but a pinch of dry oatmeal which is very good for them.
  2. i have guinea pigs. they love veggies. here is a list they like but remember all guinea pigs have different likes and dislikes. - Lettuce(any kind of mix from store or just get a head of it and pull some off) - Cucumbers - Carrots - Cantaloupe - Strawberries - Grapes - Oranges Hope this helps and try different things too. i put them out side and they eat grass too.
  3. my guinea pigs loved watermelon and lettuce and carrots
  4. if you use lettuce make sure it is romaine :romaine lettuce :oranges (they need lots of vitamin c) :carrots :bell peppers :bananas :cucumbers : tomatoes ...umm if you do apples only give them like once a week cuz too much apples can cause ulcers in their mouths ...if you do give your piggy oranges dont use the vitamin supplement in his water because it is possible to overdose your piggy on the vitamin also and he can have a stroke from it or a seizure also make sure your piggy has lots of timothy hay that should be 80 percent of his diet and the pellets and veggies... you seem to be doing a good job do far ...i have 3 guinea pigs at home so if you have more questions feel free to e-mail me .l......JFaasse_24@yahoo,com
  5. Actually, there has already been put together the perfect chart. I will send you the link for it, you can print it out and hang it on your fridge. A cups worth of Romain lettuce and a baby carrot is exactly what you are supposed to be doing daily. You can add extra veggies every so and so days for more variety. Also, add about 1/8 of a bell pepper to your daily salad as well. Fruits are only to be feed as treats On this link it has a list of other foods to avoid, and foods that are poisonous. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition/22156-everything-you-need-know-about-cavys-diet-read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html
  6. i have owned guinea pigs for many years, and rescued them too. guinea pigs are social creatures, so if you really want him to thrive get him a friend, make sure its a guinea pig friend and don't be tempted to get a rabbit as they can kill piggies, even by accident. if your pig is a boy, you have 2 choices, 1 get him a very young boar and introduce them on neutral ground, we always used the bathtub, then once you are sure they get along ok you can change out all of the older pigs bedding, and disinfect his whole cage, then introduce them back to it together(this can take a few weeks to make sure they do get along). or the more favourable of the 2 options, get your older boy neutered and find him a sow. many people say neutering boars is dangerous, but its not, we have never had a single problem with our boys being neutered. just find a good vet. now for the food, pellets as staple diet, great way to go as they cant be fussy eaters.also hay must be available all the time. lettuce is a definite no no, its bad for piggies, theres next to no nutritional value and high in water content, also never feed potato, rhubarb, or onion. heres a list of what my piggies eat. apple (mine have never had problems with these) banana, with skin left on brussell sprouts cabbage broccoli swede carrot kale pear corn on the cob(always went first) baby corn cauliflower leaves slices of orange(though be careful as this can cause sores on mouth) green beans peppers, seeds removed(some pigs love them, others don't) parsley dandelions grass theres probably more but this is what my pigs enjoy, i never weigh out or anything i just drop it in and remove whats left after half hour or so,hope it helps
  7. They can eat any fruit or veg except not tomatoes (don't like them), potatoes, citrus fruit (oranges, lemons, grapefruit, etc.) or lettuce (no neutritional value especially if it is iceberg). Daily they need alot of green veg; the following is popular with my two: cabbage (I give a leaf or two each every morning) spinach (a handful) kale (a handful) broccoli (one flourette each, they can eat the stalk when you are finished with it too) cauliflour leaves rocket watercress anything else you thing they may like to try I usually give two or three of the above in a big pile every morning and they usually get through the whole lot. As a treat every day in the evening (when I also re-fill pellets, hay and water) I give them one of the following: a carrot each some cucumber half a banana each (skin on) half an apple each That is how I feed but as long as they get enough greens you can feed them any way you want (for example carrots in the morning etc.). I like to vary their diet alot so it is interesting for them. Occationly there is something they don't like and I remember not to buy it again (they didn't like the mango I got for them!). If you give them enough greens they will get all their vitamin C their so you may find they eat less pellets. That is fine; they can survive very well on hay and greens.
  8. If you are feeding a good quality, fresh age appropriate feed with stabilized vitamin C, good fresh hay and plenty of water, you are feeding him plenty of veg. Lots of pet owners overdo greens at the expense of the animal eating its pellets and hay. If you want to expand your green food options you will find a few good charts on your options at: http://www.guinealynx.info/charts.html
