  1. I would have to agree : )
  2. iyee, but it depends what lyrics your hoping to interact with. e/g love lyrics were a lot more commonly expressed years ago, whereas it may seem nowadays its all about sex. but you do get the odd song here and there with real lyrics: like lyrics you can relate to in many ways; living conditions, love, hatred etc etc etc.
  3. it seems that way but i think that songs that have any meaning do not get played or become hits because kids think the new stuff with no meaning is what it's all about. there are more older songs with meaning than now. mike plumes song steel belted radio is about radio stations that only play songs that make money. the video is on youtube
  4. It depends on the song you've been listening to. Some old songs aren't really that great either, just as this generation also has. The first problem that I see is that people had become bored of the tones used in the older times. They, or rather this century of children, had already been tired of such type of tones so they just kind of want to have... lets say a change of pace, just like in the process of evolution. The problem is, if composers want that kind of music, then that's what music he/she will produce. That would be why I suggest the best thing to do is be the one making the music. Making music is actually a lot of fun! You can personalize it the way you want it to be then. Who knows, you song might top the charts!
  5. There are some old songs with strong lyrics and a very meaningful resonance, and then there were the Village People, so you can't lump it all together. I will say there was probably more to write about in the late 60's and 70's with Vietnam, civil rights, environmental activism, social change. If you wanted to write a song with deep meaning, it was easy to find a topic. Today, all people have to talk about is divisive politics and counter culture. Now I will go buy an IPOD and program the Pussycat Dolls because their songs have no meaning whatsoever! np: Living in the City - Stevie Wonder ( very meaningful)
  6. No, there are still meaningful songs being written now. The problem is that the radio stations play less meaningful songs than they did about 30-40 years ago. The second half of the 60's and the '70's was the best era for great music in my opinion. I'm so jealous of my dad and the rest of the baby boomers who got to grow up listening to all that amazing music- Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, The Stones, etc. Great stuff. Now, the radio stations just play whatever they think will sell to the teenyboppers.
  7. No, I'd have to respectfully disagree. I would also probably add that I think you may need to keep ranging. As long as you stay away from the silly radio stuff, which can be fun to dance to but not to think about, it should become easier to find meaningful songs. I'd also have to disagree that there's nothing to write about nowadays that would mean anything ... I could personally think of dozens of topics if I had to, and I'm not that great at brainstorming. :) The world is full of problems out there - not always the same ones as back in the 60s, true. But they're certainly out there. If there's nothing to write about, then why do we have so many problems?
