How do counselors get on preferred provider lists?
I am getting my LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) license in Oregon soon and don't know how one gets on those insurance "in network" provider lists. Anyone know?

- I can tell you in Arkansas where I'm at, it's not a matter on getting on a special list, it's a matter of what certification you hold. Each insurance will accept different degrees of certifications depending on which level of insurance that person purchases.....some levels of Blue Cross Blue Shield will accept an LPC and LPEs, some will accept only a Ph.D. All of the state insurances for children will accept LPC and other social worker certifications. The best thing to do is consult with local LPCs or agencies. Community Mental Health agencies will actually handle these things for you, give you a great place to start your career, and let you form a great network of resources ranging from school districts, attorneys and judges, DHS workers, and other Ph.Ds, LMSWs, LSWs, etc. Then you can decide if you want to go to private practice or not.
