- catholics are alot more strict...
- Catholic = faith + works = no salvation, eternal torment in hell Christian = faith alone in Jesus = salvation and eternity in heaven.
- Chris has the CORRECT answer.
- There are many different kinds of Protestantism. Some differ greatly from Catholic teachings and practices, others not as much.
- Catholics have more books in their Bible. Since the Bible was written and edited and decided by man. Protestants don't really have a collective belief among them, just a collective disbelief as far as the Roman Catholic Church is concerned. Baptists aren't Methodists aren't Lutherans, you know.
- Roman Catholic - priestly celibacy - spiritual guide - popes, bishops, priests - believe in the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus Christ in the bread and wine - follow the Bible and Tradition (captial T; this means we also follow the teachings of the early Church Fathers, etc) - extra books in the Bible - one large sect - ask saints to pray for them - started 300 AD HISTORICALLY FOR SURE (claim to be founded by Christ) Protestant - married pastors - spiritual guide - pastors - believe bread and grape juice SYMBOLIZE Jesus Christ - follow only the Bible - less books of the Bible (taken out by Martin Luther) - many sects - do not ask saints for prayers - started 1500s and on HISTORICALLY FOR SURE SIMILARITIES - Jesus Christ is the head of both - Salvation is by GOD'S GRACE ONLY - help the poor - generally believe in the Trinity EDIT: Thanks Stranger! =)
- Jesus = Whosoever believeth in me, shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life. spirituality, yes, religion, NO
- I know Catholics were the first type of Christianity. They have more emphasis on Mary, but not in a worshipping-type way. The only reason why the Protestant church was created was so King Henry could get a divorce. It's a known fact.
- Roman Catholic: Pray to god and Jesus through Saints Observe Holy Days of Obligation They have a higher figurehead: the pope They believe to earn salvation you must do good deeds and believe. -Believe in the Trinity Protestant: -Follows only what the Bible says -To earn salvation, all you need is belief -They pray directly to Jesus, no Saints. -Believe in the trinity
- The differences are slowly merging. I am not Catholic but totally agree with them on the end times and on abortion issues. In most protestant churces you won't find statues representing saints. .
- Good answer, Mystic! I couldn't put it better myself.
- "Prodostents" have not added those funny books between the old and new testaments as our Catholic friends have. Protestants actually take grammar and spelling in theology; but I am quite sure the Catholics do as well. Don't worry about spelling - that is real good compared to some i see on here. there are a lot of differences in service and so on. best a catholic tells you because I haven`t been in the Catholic church for many moons. (I am prodostent, U C)
- You're gonna need a bigger internet to list all those differences. BTW: it's protestant, as in to protest. Protestants are basically everyone who's no longer catholic because they decided that they disagreed with the catholic church back in 1540 or so. Look up Martin Luther. The catholic church requires you to partake of the "sacraments", delivered by a priest. The only way you can get to heaven or whereever, is by making sure you have recieved all the sacraments and are in the proper state. The church interprets all questions of the bible, etc. Protestants were getting to read the bible for themselves for the first time due to the recent invention of the printing press. look up "Gutenberg Bible". They read it and said, "wait a minute! This doesn't mean what the church says it means!" So they complained to the church, but the church wouldn't listen, so they started their own churches to interpret the bible their own way and get rid of the idea of ceremonies and sacraments and special dispensation, etc that the catholic church had basically made up because it's not in the bible. These churches splintered/evolved over time, and now we have many many different types of churches with vast and varied beliefs, based on however they interpret the bible.
- the only difference is that Catholics follow the pope and protestants don't. I'm Catholic, I have a lot of protestant friends, and my family isn't more religiously strict then theirs.
- Well, Catholics and Protestants are all Christians, and some differences (but not all) are... Catholics: Pope is the leader of the church Believe that body and blood of Christ is literal in that part of the mass Have priests who cannot marry Have been around since around the year 600 Believe that Jesus is the savior, and anyone who is truly sorry for their sins can go to heaven Protestants: Many different denominations (Baptists, Lutherans, Presbytarians, Assembly of God, Unitarians, etc.) Believe that body and blood of Christ is symbolic in that part of the service Have ministers who can marry Started by people who were upset at Catholics back in 1500s, like Martin Luther and Henry 8th Believes Jesus is the savior, and each denomination has beliefs about who is saved
- ctholics believe that their church was started by jesus.the seven signs that he insituted on this earth are the foudation.holy euchirist, baptisim, confirmation, holy orders, penenance, matrimony, and the last rights are all signs that jesus performmed while on earth.catholics believe that the holy euchirist is truly god.present there.catholic churches have a crucifix with jesus haning on it.they believe that the crucifiction while are sins were forgiven it was very painful.our protestant brothern believe many of the same things.the lutherns, were all once catholic,as martin luther was a jesuit priest. he differed with the church, and started a sect that were his beliefs.protestants don't have the sacrament of penance.they believe that since our sins were forgiven on the cross.they don't believe that the euchirist is truly god.they do believe it is a symbol.they distribute the host certain times a year.penanece in the catholic church is done with the priest.he has the authority to absolve you.only god can forgive.the catholics have a great devotion to mary.the protestants just see her as the mother.hope this is helpful it is a hard question.
- Some of the differences between the Roman Church (RC) and Protestants (PT): RC adheres to the Pope as the vicar of Christ PT believe that the Bible, not the Pope, is the one and only final authority [2 Timothy.3:16] . RC the Apocryphal books & tradition have equal authority with the Bible PT rejects them as a source of error [Matthew 15:3]. RC believe Mary was a perpetual virgin. PT Bible says that she had several children [Mark 6:3] RC believe Mary was without sin. PT believe only Jesus was without sin [Romans 5:12] RC believe that priests, Mary, and dead ‘saints’ are mediators. PT believe that there is only one mediator - Jesus Christ [1 Timothy 2:5] RC Pope canonizes those to be called ‘saints’. PT say all believers are saints [Philippians 1:1;4:22] RC believe Peter was not married. PT Bible says he was married [Mark 1:30] RC Justification is by faith and works. PT believe that Christians are justified by faith alone [Romans 3:28] RC claim that Peter was the ‘rock’ on which the church was founded. PT believe that only Christ is that Rock [Romans 9:33; 1 Corinthians 3:11; 10:4; 1 Peter 2:7,8]
- The biggest doctrinal difference between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians is this: We Catholics believe that the Church is a divinely guided authority, aided by the Holy Spirit (Mat. 16: 18-19). We believe that the OFFICIAL Church Catechisms are infallible truth. Catholics have two sources for theological information: Holy Tradition and Holy Scripture. This way, God can still work in our lives in ways that make sense to us. He can still reveal Himself to us by way of His Church. Protestants, on the other hand, rejected the authority of the Church during the Protestant Rebellion in the 1500s (before this, Catholicism was the only form of Christianity, besides the Orthodox Church). They believe that the ONLY source for theological information is Holy Scripture. Some even go as far as to say that the Bible not only teaches religious truth, but also scientific and historical fact (these are the fundamentalists), and they believe that this can and does override scientific and historical accomplishment of the rest of humanity. They also practice Sola Scriptura, the heretic belief that one can read and interpret the Bible for himself, without the aid of the Holy Spirit. This is why we've seen so many breaks and divisions in the Protestant sector of Christianity (over 38,000+ Protestant churches) over the 500 years since their man-made creation; while still maintaining ONE Catholic Church over 2000 years, since Jesus Himself established it in 33A.D.
- Don't listen to Chris, he is vastly misinformed. Catholics: 1) Have Scripture AND Tradition, they believe that scripture actually disproves the Protestant notion of sola scriptura, or "scripture alone" [1 Cor. 11:2 - Paul commends the faithful to obey apostolic tradition, and not Scripture alone. (http://scripturecatholic.com/scripture_alone.html#scripture-I)] 2) Put high emphasis on Mary (and a also the Saints to an extent), but they do NOT worship Mary or the Saints. [goes with Tradition] 3) Believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist: the wine and bread change into the blood and body through a process called transubstantiation [http://scripturecatholic.com/the_eucharist.html#eucharist-IIa] 4) Believe in the authority of the Pope, because they believe that the there was a line of succession from St. Peter, and they believe that St. Peter was given the authority over the other apostles by Jesus. [http://scripturecatholic.com/apostolic_succession.html] Also: [http://scripturecatholic.com/apostolic_succession.html#apostolic-III] 5) Priest should be unmarried, unless a man already has a family and converts to Catholicism. Priests should be male. (bible says that women should not teach men, and Paul states that if one can, one should remain celibate. 6) Belief in Purgatory (there cannot be mercy and justice without purgatory, and the bible says in certain places to pray for the dead - why would one pray for the dead if the dead are only in hell or heaven?) 7) The idea of Grace: Grace causes an internal change in a person. For example: before a person receives God's grace they're like a pile of dung (sorry for the image), after the person receives grace, the pile of dung transforms into a bed of roses. 8) Priests have the power to forgive sin because there is a bible passage where Jesus gave this power to the apostles [http://scripturecatholic.com/confession.html#confession-I] 9) There are 7 sacraments, and the sacraments are "real" - that is to say that they're not symbolic, some mystical transformation is actually taking place. 10) Accept the deuterocanonical (apocryphal) books of the bible. These are extra books of the Hebrew Bible that Protestants and Jews don't recognize. Catholics believe that they should accept them as scripture because at the time of Jesus, they were used. Catholics believe that Jesus quoted from these books, and even though the Jews later took them out at the Council of Jamnia and did not consider them equal to scripture, Jesus used them so they should still be kept in. Protestants: 1) Believe in sola scriptura - "scripture alone" 2) Do not put high emphasis on Mary, though they respect her as the mother of Jesus. 3) I think Lutherans believe in the real presence of the Eucharist, but have the doctrine of Consubtantiation (or something like that). I'm not sure about this though. Other non-Catholic Christians see the Eucharist as a symbol only, and don't believe that Jesus is really present. 4) Do not believe in the authority of the Pope. Do not believe there was apostolic succession. 5) Pastors can be married (I think in all non-Catholic Christian denominations), and in some churches, females can be pastors. (bible says something about bishops having to be married, women were shown as heads of house churches and working right alongside male disciples) 6) Purgatory does not exist 7) The idea of Grace: Grace covers sin. Before a person receives God's grace they're like a pile of dung, after the person receives grace, the person is still a pile of dung, but God's grace covers the dung, so that it smells like a bed of roses. (This was not my example, it was from textbook that I had from a Christianity class I took in college) 8) Only God forgives sin, there is no need to go to a priest as one can go directly to God. 9) I'm not sure about Lutherans or other churches, but some non-denominational churches believe that the sacraments are only symbols, no mystical transformation is taking place. 10) Do not accept the apocryphal books because they don't believe Jesus used them and the line of thought goes, "if the Jews don't even accept them, why should Christians" (this is put very simply, of course). Catholics and Protestants: Justification of salvation is a tricky one, as others have noted. The views are actually quite similar. Catholics also think that Grace is a free gift and necessary for salvation. To put it simply, Protestants believe in faith alone ( good works, or deeds are the outcome of faith) and Catholics believe NOT in faith alone or works alone. Actions reflect faith. So to me, this sounds remarkably similar, though I think there are some minor differences. It is a misconception to believe that Catholics think that one can achieve salvation without faith (belief). The bible says repeatedly that we will be judged by our deeds, so this is why good works (deeds) are emphasized in Catholicism, but Catholicism does not teach "works alone". - Most of these answers were wrong. Why? Because there are VERY MANY Protestant sects, and often the differences between 2 Protestant sects is greater than the difference between a Protestant sect and Roman Catholicism. For example: some large Protestant sects *do* believe that the "Lord's Supper" is not symbolic many large Protestant sects *do* consider sources other than Scripture for doctrine some large Protestant sects have *more* books in their bible than does the Roman Catholic Church some large Protestant sects *do* pray for saintly intercession SO, when you get those answers listing "Protestants do this" or "Protestants do that" - you can pretty much figure that those answers are NOT correct, and that the answerer has a very limited experience with various Protestant sects. The first 2 paragraphs of Jim CAB provide a good answer - the best I saw. The remainder of his answer, however, contains error. Jim, http://www.bible-reviews. com/selector_rc.html
