To the "start a business" types in the Politics section, how would it help the American economy?
Do you not realize that over the past 20-some years, the US government has encouraged business to take American jobs out of the country? The few businesses that make anything in America only do so out of the goodness of their heart. The rest are practically encouraged to move out. How are people going to have any money to BUY YOUR SERVICES OR PRODUCT when you start a business then? One way or the other, an economy totally based on the service industry CANNOT remain stable forever! If we don't make anything, America cannot participate in international trade! You can tell poor people to start all the maid service companies and landscaping companies, but in time, there will be a glut of service industry jobs, followed by a population that has no way of paying for them. Some basic facts about the economy: 1. We need production jobs in America. 2. We need government oversight. 3. Service industry jobs will stagnate an economy. 4. Government needs to provide social services and stop giving everything to the defense contractors. 5. Corporations need to stop being worshiped. 6. Forbes needs to eliminate their "Richest List."

- Ok...let's all just give up. Why bother. The deck's stacked. We'll never make it. It's no use trying. Let's all just turn victim. It'll be so much easier. We do want it easy. Someone will care for us. The govt. will care for us. Obama loves and cares for us all.
- Another pointless rant... Even SMALL businesses have a ripple effect. My husband has a painting business. Despite not hiring anyone, he and his brother do very well. Things they buy and consume on a regular basis (and a lot of with huge accounts), paint obviously, paint supplies, heavy duty equipment (scissor lift, e.g), business cards, estimate forms, contracts, etc. All of these other businesses benefit by them having those needs to operate. Too much government oversight is burdensome and is exactly WHY businesses leave.
- Seems your liberal 'economics' professor forgot the details of why corps are pushed 'overseas' by unions, labor laws and heavy taxes and overbearing govt regulations. Might wanna have a look at those factors someday.
- You're a Marxist. You're political ideals are not that far off from Communism. If you were to spout this garbage out of your mouth in the early 50's your government would have you imprisoned. You're WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG If you want this type of economy,, GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY and go find it elsewhere. We don't want it here. Think about it. It would be SOOOOOOOOO much easier for you to leave this country than it would be for us to change. One catch, once you're gone, you can't come back. ENJOY!
- So your alternative is to fall on your knees, worship Obama and admit you need the federal government to survive?
- The federal government is not and has not been encouraging the private sector to leave the country. The high cost of energy and labor (plus unions) is doing that. But the federal government is organizing The North American Union! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Union
- In my opinion, this is the worst time to "start a business." Who has the expendable money to purchase your product/service? All I need to is drive through my town and see all the closed up store fronts, 70% off sales, and store closing sales.
- i owned and operated a daycare. that's a service industry. i was in direct competition with the government (project head start). i accepted no government funding. and i made a decent profit. but i also dearly loved my job. that does make a difference. our problem right now is that there are businesses out there that have employees that no longer have pride in their product/service. i personally think it's time we all take a good hard look at our work ethic, or the lack thereof. it's time to re-evaluate our attitudes towards work period. we have become a nation of victims. get it done fast and cheap. we have become far too accustomed to leeching off of our government. we are no longer self sufficient. i'm telling you, the small business owner is not a dinosaur. try as obama might to choke them out. it can work. for our economy to survive, it must work.
- Has government encouraged businesses to ship their businesses overseas, or has it with stifling regulations, prohibitive costs, and taxes forced them to do so, just so they can say in business? Too much government involvement is killing our economy, they claim to support small businesses, but so many restrictions and regulations on them that it's a wonder that anyone could start a business.
- Thank you for your insight. I was planning on starting another small business and employing around 20 people. But, as you pointed out, this will have no effect on the economy, so I must be planning to waste my time. Now, I think we'll just stay small time and see how that works out. Oh, and by the way, most of America's wealth is built on the backs of small businesses. Want the larger "production jobs" back ? Rail against the tax and spend democrooks who gave us the second highest corporate tax rate in the world.
- most production jobs rely on the service people to make them work. sales and delivery to start with. and more service businesses means more need for products. mechanics such as myself buy auto parts tools electricity and office supplies.and pay the rent on the shop. defense contractors and suppliers provide many jobs with good pay and benefits most are production jobs making tanks, trucks, ammo weapons and uniforms. as well as the service side that is done overseas. corporations are not worshiped but most people are glad we have them when they need a job or the product they produce.
