Will spark plug wires listed for another car brand work with my brand if they are the same size?

Suppose I buy spark plug wires that are listed for say Ford or Honda, but they are 10.2mm (the same size I need). Would they work for a Volkswagen Jetta? Or is size irrelevant? Also whats a good price for spark plug wires? Where can I find affordable spark plug wires? Please don't list Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts.

  1. There is more to plug sizing then the size of the threads. They come in heat ranges and other factors. Most plug books have an interchange guide in the back(http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/skidoolympique/SPARK_PLUG_CROSS_REFERENCE.htm) Use it with the number for VW engine and see what is the same plug. Try using the Napa site and see what other brands work, along with the exact plug specified. Make up a list and see if your local store has any of them. I looked up the plugs for the smaller engine. As for the cost of plug wires, I spent about 50 dollars for a new set for my Miata. That is about the going rate for some better plug wires. As for were to buy them, any parts store. It may take a day to get them in if you want a premium brand or rated wire. A more generic type may be in stock.
  2. Size is irrelevant. Length is important. The end connectors are going to be different. That is something you got to watch for. You should be able to buy a bag of connectors that go into the distributor and go and buy a length of spark plug wire off a bulk roll. Just measure the total length of all the wires combined, and cut off a length of spark plug wire. I am not certain but the Jetta ends that go onto the spark plugs are ceramic and just screw into the wire(the old air cooled VW's were that way) unscrew and screw onto a new ignition wire and fasten the brass clip on at the other end that went into the distributor.
