Is there a way to force a server to list the directory contents and ignore index.html?

Is there a way to send an HTTP request to force an Apache server (or otherwise) to list its directory contents and ignore the index.html/index.php file?

1. What it gives is dependant on the server config, so unless you have admin rights to access the configuration you won't be able to override this.
