How exactly do guest lists for clubs work?

Just turned 18 and not exactly sure about them.

1. A guest list is a list of people who are allowed in a club; perhaps as "guests" (i.e. free) or on another night it may be so the bouncers know who to let in - nobody else gets in under any circumstances (excluding police etc).
