i play alot of online games and i love to watch videos but i have a bit of a connection problem?

alright now listen to me because i am really mad right now and i could talk forever. its been over a month since i got my new laptop because my old computer broke (not laptop). my old computer ran really smoothly and (without lag) i would be able to play any online game and watch any video. but now i Just bought a new dell laptop which cost me around 600- $800. but on this laptop i cannot play any online games it constantly tells me that i have connection lost or error connecting to server. i honestly play loads of online games but now i cant even say hi to my friends because it logs me out after about, oh idk 15-45 seconds tops. its really getting me aggravated and its making me really impatient. so now onto my video problems. after a long day of playing online games or going outside to play basketball with my neighbor i like to sit at my computer to watch something funny, exciting, scary, or even something saddening on youtube, but u know what. !I CANT! its not the fact that i cant get on youtube or any other video sites its the fact that when watching a video it plays around 10-20 seconds of it then it stops.. making me wait another 2-6! minutes Just to play another 20-?? seconds. also Just to let you know that sometimes *MOST OF THE TIME* i wont let me though showing a box saying i cant go through telling me to try again. then after about 10-13 refreshes later it starts going at the speed of light... -_- ironically... Just for it to happen AGAIN a random amount of pages later... MORE INFORMATION 1) My old computer that was so great was a windows xp that used a wired connection from a modem called TOSHIBA PCX2500 which is the SAME EXACT modem im using for my dell laptop 2) my dell laptop is windows vista home basic with 3.00 GB of RAM.. now i know what your going to say.. vista sucks.. or change to windows xp.. but i cant my parents wont let me -_- they think i cant do anything right that involves computers... (they are totally right i am definitely not a computer person) 3) ive been told by many people to contact my isp but i don't even know their number.. my parents usually do that kind of stuff.. 4) if you have a heart please tell me in steps of how to fix this monstrosity of a problem.. i need it in steps do to extra info #2.. im kinda slow when it comes to computers.. thanks alot guys if you help me fix this problem i wouldn't know what to say.. this problem is a hazard just waiting to be fixed... ^_^ thanks again =D

1. If you are using the laptop wireless (assuming you are) then it sounds like you are having a problem with the modem and interference. If you are using the laptop in the same room as the modem then it shouldn't have any problems, if you are using it somewhere else and it starts acting up then something between the rooms is blocking the signal from the modem. If that isn't the problem then you may not connected to your modem at all, laptops have a tendency to connect to any nearby networks...like if your neighbors have wireless internet or someone that lives near you. In that case you might have to get someone to setup your network connections for you so that you are connected to YOUR modem and not a wireless one outside of your home. If you are connected to your own modem then I would say to buy a good router and have someone set it up for you and that should solve your lag problems.
