Have you ever bought a major appliance on Craig's List?

My husband and I are looking for an inexpensive washer and dryer. Have you ever bought a washer or dryer on Craig's List? I'm afraid I'll take it home and find out something is wrong with it! Then I'm stuck.

  1. I know I would be apprehensive about buying something like that.=)
  2. Yes we bought a washer and dryer off of our local craigslist. I have purchased many items from craigslist. I would suggest that you find out year it was purchased and always take a look at the item you are buying. Our washer and dryer were one year old and no problems. Ask for manuals to go with the item. If I could not get a manual I did not buy the item. Don't forget to offer a lower price never just agree to their price. If the item is still "plugged in so to speak" ask to see that it works. It's just like going to a garage sale but through the web first. Good luck.
  3. There is another place that you can buy washer and dryer and get a warranty. Go to one of those rent to own places and tell them you want a pre-leased washer and dryer. It wont cost as much as a new one and it is guaranteed while you are paying for it. You can barter with these company's about amount and length of payments unless it is brand new.
  4. I have had great experiences with craig's list. Think of it as buying something out of you local paper. You have to screen the items. How old is it, why are you selling it, and when you go see the items, take someone with you and see what you think about the house, yard and people. Does the place look unkept and like they would scam someone for 100 bucks, or does it seem like it would not be worth their time. Do they seem like nice people? Ask them, "does the washer and drier work fine? Have you had any problems?" Consider what the worst case scenario is and see if you can deal with that. For example, what if you did have to get something fixed. It might be an extra 50-100 dollars. Even with that situation, are you still getting a good set for a decent price. For the most part, people are good and wouldn't want to scam you. But of course, there are a few dishonest people out there. Best of luck!
