  1. The way to rank up is by exp or skill. To get exp your team has to win the match or you come in first to third in a solo game (warning action sack does not offer exp). The other way is skill. To raise your skill your have to progress in the way you play (ex. you get more head shots with a sniper or you kill more opponents in a single life) then the bungie servers will notice your better handling of this certain skill and it will raise it up ( you can only receive skill in ranked matches and lone wolfs is the best game to raise your skill in ) . Warning if you stop playing at the skill you are at (ex you get less kills or head shots than your average) it will lower your skill by one. Good luck!
  2. Halo 3 uses the TrueSkill system which is regrettably based purely on wins and losses alone. Basically, there are two hidden values (Mu and Sigma) which are changed each time you win or lose a game. Winning games in a row seems to give you 'momentum' as well. Mu is the actual value which decides your 'skill' (the number to the right of your gamertag in the pre game lobby) and Sigma is a value which affects how easily your skill goes up OR down. I think coming in the top three in Lone Wolves is good.
