Is being a Freight Broker all that it's cracked up to be?
My husband is a commercial truck driver and since I'm home all day with a 4 year old who will be going to school soon I've been doing some research on Freight Brokers. It was named one of the top ten home businesses and it sounds pretty lucrative, plus I feel that I have what it takes since prior to becoming a stay at home mom I worked as an accountant, an auditor, as well as a few customer service and admin jobs. Does anyone have any advice, or insider information about this business? Or tips on where to get my license, initial steps to take, or even just personal stories about your experience? I would especially like to know about the initial few months since I read that it takes some time to get yourself established. I'm the type of person who jumps into things with both feet and I just want to make sure that it's a good decision for myself as well as my family. Thank you for any info you might be able to offer!

- As you must already know the trucking business is very competitive. The trucking business also tells lots of lies about how much money you can make...just ask your husband about the sacrifice he is making for the pay he is getting. Don't be fished in. I would think that some sort of financial commitment is required and you'll find that it is on sided. In other words you will assume all of the financial risk for less than adequate rewards. I've been in the trucking business, and I got out. If you want to spend any time at all with your 4 year old, run the opposite direction as fast as you can. I understand where you're coming from and it's very commendable. If you have accounting skills why not set up a bookkeeping service from home? There's no overhead, you just need to get on the phone and find some customers. Maybe there's some imaginative way that you can combine your various skills and create something unique.
