Why do people get so angry over "best of" lists?

I understand the whole "I can't stand that you have an opinion that's different than mine" psychology on the internet, but when I look at the comment sections or replies to lists, reactions are always just straight-up mean with a lean towards personal attacks on the author. It's the same thing with the IMDB Top 250. Why are these lists so important?

1. Because everyone wants their favorite thing/place/whatever to be number one.
