How does the buddy list work at AIM?

I'm new to Instant Messaging so bear with me. Allright, so I know somebody's AIM name and I don't notify them or anything but I put that name in my buddy list. When they sign on, do I automatically get a note that they're online? 2nd question: When *I* sign on (keeping in mind that they don't know that I've added them to buddies), do they get a note that I"m online?

1. Only if they have added you as a buddy.
2. If you set it in preferences to notify you when a buddy signs on then yes you will get a notice. When you sign on they won't know unless you've been added to their buddy list, and they've set there preferences to give notices.
3. They will get a note asking them if they want to add you or block you, just like they would on any other messenger (e.g. MSN), so once they sign in they can choose that option. So don't worry, once they accept you they'll immediately been signed online in your list. I understand that it can get confusing, but with enough help and time it only gets easier.
