Does the whole concept of a Wish list work?

I just set up a universal wishlist with amazon.com, where third party people will get me the stuff I want. Does this work. If not then why does amazon have it.

1. 3rd party meaning strangers??? cause...let's say my sis...had a wish list...I would go in there now and then and buy the crappy book for her....cause I love her.... awwwww.....
