- That's not how Section 8 works.
- Section 8 will not allow you to have roommates. I do not know your details, but you could be waiting for 4-5 years in NYC. It would be easier to get a better paying job and just renting a normal place.
- You apply for a voucher in one name that I am aware of but check with your local Housing Authority about that. If you share the apartment, their incomes have to be reported to the Housing people because your rent amount depends on the total household income. The application asks who the Head of Household is. A voucher is issued to that person and when you have your voucher interview, you can indicate you have others in your household but depending on your relationship with them, the apartment size has guidelines. The answer is no. Look in Craigslist for a cheap place or go to the link. Get your name down on the list. Where I live it takes 4 -5 years for your name to reach top of list. If you can find a Section 8 building on your own, you may be able to get in that way instead of waiting to get a voucher through Housing.

- To my knowledge, section 8 is a lottery, there are no shortcuts. You might be at the front of the list or the back of the list. If you're at the back you'll probably be waiting years. I don't think section 8 allows roommates unless it's family.
