Do you have to cite sources in an article you want to publish?

I have written many papers, but never an article. Do you cite sources in an article? If so, does it work the same way as the styles available? I've don't recall an article with sources. Do you also list them at the end of the article, or just the body? Help.

  1. Only if the information you have is YOUR ORIGINAL WORK, IDEA, etc. then you don't need to cite any other sources. However, if you use any sources such as other articles, textbooks, reports, etc. - in other words, they are NOT your own original work, but are copyrighted materials of someone else - then you do need to cite them. Otherwise, you could be guilty of what is called plagiarism (using someone else's work and claiming it as your own) - this is cheating and can be grounds for suspension, expulsion, or a failing grade for your coursework - depending on your school's rules for this. You cite them in the footnotes at the end of your article.
