direct mail????

to send direct mail to people to advertise do I have to buy names and ad's from a mailing list company or can i just send it to random names and ad's out the phone book for example? would it be illegal if i didn't get the names and ad's from a mailing list data base? please help!

1. No, you can do any of thoise things. If they chose to have theri details in a phone book, it is in the public domain. They only people who need to worry are the ones who publish the address details. They can only do it if given permission. If you buy a list, or get details from a book, you can contact them
2. if its email it would be spam if you sent it to anyone, if you buy the names from lists it means they have at some time said its ok to send me info regarding a product, there is usualy in small print a bit that says we may pass your details to a 3rd party (you for instance) if its snail mail you send out its just junk mail to the recipriant
