- http://www.toonboom.com/main/ This website has a bunch of products that animation studios and such use. I'm getting into cartoon animation myself and i'm just practicing in Adobe ImageReady along with photoshop CS2. For drawing characters, i suggest going to the library and getting books on beginning cartooning. Preston Blair has really good stuff. Even though it looks basic, it will set the foundation for most cartooning works. As far as drawing characters go, i strongly suggest going to figure drawing classes and getting books on anatomy. Draw from illustrator's reference books. Once you learn anatomy you can draw anatomically correct characters off the top of your head. Anatomy is hard work, but believe me, it's worth it. Animation studios require most artists working for them to have a mastery of human and most animal anatomy. After you get your basic anatomy down, you can change features and do slight distortion to create your unique characters. The big thing in learning how to draw is PRACTICE. I draw nonstop. At first it may seem like you're not improving, but in a month, even a week's time, look back at your work from before and you will see a difference. Well have fun, good luck, and don't stop drawing.
