  1. omg no don't ever accept cashier's checks on craigslist!
  2. CASH is KING
  3. You can't tell without depositing it - some fake checks are expertly forged. Why not ask for a postal money order instead? Those are harder to forge.
  4. DON'T take a cashiers check from craigslist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER!!!! craigslist always tells you this. Have them pay you in cash. It is a scam. I have sold all my computers and office furniture on craigslist and they ALL paid cash. some items were over a grand. don't do it, ever! they can go to the bank.
  5. Call the bank its from. They will verify the check for you. If you cash a fake check you will be charged the amount of the check PLUS a chargeback fee, so make sure its good before depositing!
  6. I hope you haven't accepted it yet, this is more than likely a scam.
  7. Nonsense. Just take it right to your bank. If you can go to a teller, and not the abm. The issuing bank makes copies so they can find out who it is. Of course, don't ship until the check has cleared.
  8. DON'T DO IT!!!! 1-you will NOT be allowed to cash it - you will have to deposit it and HOPE it clears, and if it bounces, the bank may charge you a fee for that tell him you want cash and will only complete the transaction IN PERSON - you need cash to pay to get a cashiers check, and that costs money, so why would any legit buyer spend that extra money? you won;t know until you deposit it and see if it bounces, at which point, you are out the money AND the XBox and do ship do anything thru the mail when using Craigslist ONLY DEAL IN PERSON and ACCEPT ONLY CASH or you have no one to blame but yourself if you get ripped off
  9. you cannot tell until your bank tells u that it is fake when they find out that there is no such bank account anywhere the newspaper in my city reported a similar incident when a guy sold his $2000 camera on craiglist and was given a cashier check which turned out to be fake. Lucky that the seller took a picture of the buyer, but the policeman is still looking for that buyer.
  10. The odds are very, very high that this is a fake check. Read the warnings on Craigslist. They say to deal in person only and never ship something. If this is a fake check you may not find out for several months. It's not a thing of just a few days. It's simply not worth the risk to you. You will find a buyer locally who is willing to pay cash.
